Brief Info: Issued in 1969 prior to Simmons joining Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention where he featured on ‘Chunga’s Revenge’ (1970); ‘Waka/Jawaka’ (1972); ‘Roxy & Elsewhere’, plus later compilation live and outtake sets. Clearly Frank saw his potential in 1969 and signed him. No no real surprise this followed the same fate as most other albums issued on Zappa’s Straight label. Straight and Bizarre (in America), were founded by Zappa for artists that were a little different with little potential, they were given freedom to record what they wanted without constraints and pressures of sales. Most were uncommercial and selling in predictable small numbers. One or two exceptions apart (Captain Beefheart and Alice Cooper), most were ignored or unnoticed, and quickly deleted as the label folded in 1970. Simmons had made one previous album prior to this, also in 1969 on Straight. This a soundtrack to a fairly obscure outlaw biker film ‘Naked Angels’, that even more difficult to find as an original than this. So both were purchased by a tiny few hard-core Zappa fans. ‘Lucille’ features Zappa himself on guitar on a couple of tracks as well as fellow M.O.I. member, Ian Understood. Frank fans will know it features two early versions of songs that later appeared on his own albums – those being the title track that featured on ‘Joe’s Garage’ and ‘Wonderful Wino’ on ‘Zoot Allures’. This is a gem of an album. now much admired by fans of blues-rock. Zappa’s influence is clear from the outset as he produced the set as well. It proved to be his last album for many years and both Straight originals are rare. This a lovely UK copy, the record appears little played and sounds superb. As usual, the covers on Straight albums were not laminated, so wear is so hard to avoid, and this has some, but still is one of the best I have seen in ages (my own personal copy apart), and even that is not perfect. So a highly recommended set in its own right, and essential for FZ fanatics like myself.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(++): arguably better for a cover that refuses to wear well. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Matt gatefolds with a thick quite heavy record inside since the back end of the 1960s will in most cases mean wear, and especially ring wear. The front on this one is impressive with hardly any rubbing, no light fading or stickers issues, all of which are also highly prone to. Any marks are light and few, mostly seen under light, the odd small tip crease. This front will not prove easy to find better.

Cover Back: The back has the almost mandatory ring wear, but in terms of this, it is only quite light as-seen. A little edge and corner tip rubbing also, but I consider this back to have fared pretty well all considered.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault at all inside, and Jeff looks pretty threatening armed with his hairdryer.

Top Edges: Both straight and flat with only patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Similar with more consistent rubbing to the back, the front with less. Some thickening to the end panel card near the right corner of the back. There are no splits or repairs to any part of this cover.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front is closed and remains sharp. The back entrance edges are clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on, this only near the central area. All untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: The spine ends have rubbed as-seen, mostly to the top, lesser to the bottom. Then some mainly light patchy rubbing here-and-there, but the text has largely survived intact with just the super-fine natural central crease-line over it. Solid, straight with any compression light. Folded near square, so the edges meet up closely together. With very close observation, I cannot rule-out the odd tiny tip-in of a chip or two, but if so, its discrete, neat and not really obvious.

Corners: Corner tip rubbing ranges from light to above moderate with fine shape retained. No heavy bashes, the odd dink maybe, the wear is rubbing which is mostly apparent on the spine top.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover for sure, in real terms this has fared generally well with the main areas in quite impressive condition. An album that surfaces infrequently so it could prove difficult to find much better. With reasonably polite clues of age, it will please many collectors, but not quite for the more discerning.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): a basic plain solid unlined white inner with a little creasing and rim impression, hardly a suprise for a record this age. Any discolouration only light and all edges are unsplit with no repairs. Also made in Great Britain and including the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very fine and faint as seen critically under bright light. Merely wispy traces, most even finer than hairlines with no penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers, this is a lovely Straight record. Visually a super copy that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This somewhat ‘lost’ original album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Another quality production by Zappa who himself plays guitar on two songs. Simmons himself has a fine blues-style vocal, and the whole album works perfectly. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this UK first issue significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been carefully handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
