Label/Format: Parrot – a US subsidiary of London Records. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both practically as made: ultra clean and attractive with barely a spindle trace to seen. Another ‘lost’ diamond from that collection of barely played records recently acquired.

Cat Number: PAS 71020.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture: US, this album was not issued in the UK (or anywhere else I doubt).

Run-Out Groove Etchings: ‘Bell Sound’ on both run-outs

Rarity & Info: Rare: this album sold virtually none, and with one other rare issue in 1969 that also disappeared with no sales, this lady was not heard of any more on record until 1972. So who is the mysterious Jennifer? Well at this time she was called Jennifer ‘Warren’, but is now better known to the music world as Jennifer Warnes which is her real name anyway. This was her debut album from 1968 and although this is a lovely pop-folk album with a distinct hint of period psych, it sold zilch and disappeared off the map. An eclectic mix of songs and including four gems by big name artists, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell and The Bee Gees. She became well-known to the world with a massive hit single in 1982 with ‘Up Where We Belong’ which was used in the hugely successful film ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’ and then in 1986 with the release of the sublime album ‘Famous Blue Raincoat’, which was a dedicated album of Leonard Cohen covers with incredible audiophile sound quality. A long favourite of mine to test any new piece of hi-fi equipment, that album is unreservedly recommended to all music lovers and sound connoisseurs. For fans of early Joni Mitchell and similar female artists of the time, this album is sure to appeal. This rare issue actually made to the trip from the US to the UK without a drill-hole in the cover and that is highly unusual for these types. I have never seen this album before and quite unlikely to again, this simply disappeared and few will ever be seen or offered, especially outside the US. With a cover that has stood the test-of-time well and the record possibly unplayed until now, it even more unlikely a better one will surface either. This truly can be called a ‘lost’ gem.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+ .

Cover Grade and Format: EX and for a US printed cover made with thick, brittle and fragile card, this more than stood the test of time and is arguably better than excellent. A matt finished non-laminate with the original paste-on back panel.

Cover Front: A gorgeous cover with lovely artwork of the young Jennifer Warnes. This has little to fault bar a faint ring rub arc near the top edge and a bottom corner tip crease. The general lack of rubbing on this and other similar covers is rare and this is very clean and fresh looking. In terms of US 1960s covers, this front is exceptional.

Cover Back: The matt black back is clearly always going to show some ringwear, but here only light. There is a vintage sticker removal scuff near the top right corner that looks likely improved, being so dark it shows little anyway. Barely any creasing and other rubbing light and faint, this too looks lovely.

Top Edge: A couple of light rubs only, no splits and very straight.

Bottom Edge: Light and mild, patchy rubbing only, again on splits and straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and no feathering (or trimming). Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Very solid, straight, uncompressed and square, a little manufacture surface crinkle (very normal on a US cover). All text is practically perfect and unworn and hardly any rubbing at all and devoid of splits.

Corners: All have rubbed with a small tip crease on the bottom right. The bottom left tip has the surface paper scuffed away. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this immensely fragile late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better and hugely challenging to find at all. When was the last time one of these was offered on Ebay outside the US? This beautiful item should please many collectors, clearly this is a historical piece from then a fledgling and unknown artist who went on to do well.

The Inner: This one does came to me in a hard unlined inner which is not the original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: This record is as close to full Mint as any 41+ year old record ever will be. This looks unplayed with immaculate playing surfaces. Even devoid of the usual paper or transit scuffs US albums seem to attract when imported. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Visually a super record that should please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This incredible genuine original 1968 record plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is a very clean pressing. I would be confident there will not be a better example of this lost record, it could be matched (possibly) but not beaten. In selling terms, a non-starter, non-charter with less than a handful of sales. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record, obviously the first I have ever seen or heard. This copy will prove near impossible to find better and can be strongly recommended. Another from the vaults of vintage disappeared records, certainly one for the fan and serious collector of the unusual.

What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). The record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with THREE or EVEN FOUR VERY THICK stiffners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords (please see my picture of these stiffners and compare to the wafer-thin commercially available ones that offer pretty much zero protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
