Label/Format: Reprise, original format as seen, these have matt quite smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Side one has a round sticker also as seen, removal probably quite easy, but it would likely leave a residue mark, I quickly decided to leave-it-be. Both still clean, fresh and attractive with only moderately light, fine and fairly faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. The record itself plays beautifully, just a couple of sounds on side ones run-in grooves – NOT on the music in any way. These sounds easily avoided with careful placement of the stylus just before the music area.

Brief Info: The first ever solo album by a member of Fleetwood Mac, issued early in 1970 with almost full backing by Fleetwood Mac as seen above, this in all tense and purpose was another Fleetwood Mac album in all but name, although Peter Green only briefly appears. The material all very much a blend of blues and 1950s style rock, clearly Spencer was a great fan of this era of music, the sound carried on forward on the next Fleetwood Mac album ‘Kiln House’ (also on offer) later the same year. He proved to have a great ability to mimic artists like Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley and this is a very entertaining album, my first ever copy I have offered. A very fine example it is too – the only blemish for sound is on the actual run-in groove of side one, all the music totally unaffected and plays beautifully. As stated further up, the clicks easily avoided by careful placement of the stylus just before the music area. Quite a scarce album this, and not seen often, one that has clearly eluded me for sure. Fans of early Fleetwood Mac should enjoy this one.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes the polylined white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Yes, another dark cover prone to all forms of wear. The bottom edges apart, this has little and remains attractive. It has another sticker on the top left corner as seen, this similar to the one on the label that clearly meant something to the original owner. Again, it should prove easy to remove if deemed necessary, again I left it alone as there is always risk involved. Hardly the most flattering picture of the artist – as seen, he looks totally out-of-it. The main factor is the general lack of wear to a surface that will rarely avoid it. Minimal marks or creases, a fine gripper line seen on the right in manufacture, natural and nothing to with any wear and quite common on such covers. Slight rubbing near the edges and corner tips, but almost the least that can be expected, there are no price sticker removal marks or tears. Overall a fine looking front for a scarce original cover front.

Cover Back: In somewhat sharp contrast to the front, the back has truly beautiful artwork as seen. The only mildish wear of note on the corner tips that have some rubbing. Any rim impression from the heavy record only light, and the absence of any penetrating ring wear is the best news possible. Hardly any creasing either, this splendid looking back sets a high standard.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Hardly anything to fault inside, this is very impressive.

Top Edges: Again both edges are in superb condition. Straight, flush, flat and parallel with hardly any wear.

Bottom Edges: These have wear as many storage edges will have. So the reason for the arguably cautious grading. The back has moderate rubbing, the darker front probably the same, but I more than suspect a little DIY by the previous owner with some pen ‘enhancement’. Far from pancake makeup, but reasonably subtle, I will always mention this if it is even suspected or there for a fact, which this almost certainly is. With all other main areas of this cover in impressive condition, some wear to storage edges hardly bothers me much.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front closed edge is neatly straight and hardly worn. The back edges have thickened as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, the manufactured cuts are not quite flush to even reiterate the fact.

Spine and Text: An impressive wide spine with minimal hint of discolouration to the white surface. Solid, straight with no compression or crushing, also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel (bar the right). All text is perfect and unworn, also superbly centred for good measure as seen.

Corners: Moderate tip rubs to the right ones, less on the spine which remain very neat. Very fine shape mostly retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this clearly challenging early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Hardly a common one, and fewer still will surface with less overall wear to the main surfaces. This fine cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white polylined inner with light darkening around the seam adhesive areas. Crisp neat window circles and the lining fresh and still clear, some creasing to the left corners. No edge splits or repairs. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: which hardly does this splendid vintage record justice. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy played a few times on evidence, but this offers fantastic clean sound with any surface marks few and light as seen critically under bright angled light. NOTE: as stated above, the run-in groove of side one has a line mark that causes one hiss sound, then a jump – I reiterate, this has NO AFFECT on the music whatsoever, it happens before the stylus makes contact with the music area, so in audio terms, harmless. With careful placement of your stylus, this mark can even be avoided. Be totally assured, the album plays beautifully with fantastic sound quality, all other areas have no glitches or tracking issues*, the record was a pure joy to play-grade. Visually still a lovely record that should please many collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This debut Jeremy Spencer album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault bar the run-in issue as clearly mentioned now a few times. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, hardly anything noted on the all the music areas, overall an exceptional clean pressing. Very well recorded and produced as well, this is a great piece of rock nostalgia. The run-in groove area probably from a stylus drop from yesteryear, luckily the sound area was totally missed (or this record would not have been purchased or offered). Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and (the one time apart) with due care. Accidents happen, I doubt if any record owner has never had one, luckily with modern ultra low tracking weights, few ever cause issues – but back-in-the-day, such slipups could prove more serious. So when the actual music began, nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – the only bit I did not enjoy is when Spencer sounds like he is vomiting, which was a piece of detail too far for me. This heavyweight first issue record could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended if the run-in issue, is no issue.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
