Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only light, very fine and faint spindle marks that show little. This terrific record plays superbly.

Brief Info: One of the band’s most cherished albums, their fourth, and first to include the talents of new keyboard player Rick Wakeman who replaced Tony Kaye. Noteworthy also, it was their first album to employ the skills of graphic artist Roger Dean. This was a highly popular album within the progressive rock genre and sold well. A band at the peak of their creativity, but only available for a relatively brief time on the Plum format, and even harder to find in anything like decent condition. This cover has edge wear, it seldom avoided, but the main surfaces are generally fine as seen. The record more than compensates, it appears little used and plays superbly. It includes the 1071 (October 1971) inner sleeve.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. This has the original 2401019 number, also the stapled booklet adhered to the centre. Most later ones were (of course) Kinney number covers and the insert was a loose insert booklet. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and includes the original lined Polydor-style inner sleeve.

Cover Front: One or rock’s most uncompromising covers, this front in very fine condition overall. Yes, some patchy rubbing on the edges and corner tips. but the main area has little, and avoided any sticker issues or significant creasing, a light one on the bottom right corner. The deep colour retained with no light fading, that a bonus, this intensely coloured cover is very prone to it.

Cover Back: Massively prone to ring wear, which this has avoided. However, some moderate, but fairly small rubbing to the spine fold and corner tips. Any rubbing again light, again creasing has been avoided.

Cover Inner Gatefold & Booklet: The inside covers are impressive with little to fault overall. The 8-page booklet still quite solidly attached, adhered and stapled to the centre. All pages are practically as-made with lovely band member artwork and graphics.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush with mainly light, patchy rubbing, more near the ends.

Bottom Edges: Similar, but with more rubbing which is mostly nearer moderate.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The closed front is neat and crisp. Same for the back outer edge that is a fraction less wide than the inner one, so that has thickened in places with some burring. But all are guaranteed untrimmed and totally natural.

Spine and Text: Solid and quite thick, straight with barely any compression. Folded square, so the edges meet up closely and parallel. There is patchy light to moderate rubbing as seen, however, most of the text unaffected and largely still present and strong as seen.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing mostly, a little more in places with fair shape retained withou bashes or major dinks.

Cover Summary: Not for perfectionists of course, but this is still a very respectable example of this difficult and challenging original cover. It still does the classic Roger Dean artwork fine justice, with most of the wear on the sides, it should please many collectors, but not the purists.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the Polydor-style polylined inner sleeve is date-coded 1071 (October 1971) just prior to the month of issue. Only marked down for the usual ageing of the seam adhesive areas and general mild discolouration. It has two perfect window circles and the lining still clear and fresh. Minimal creasing and just one tiny thinner edge split, so small, I did not deem it worthy of repair.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: with most of any surface marks or blemishes very fine, wispy and faint as seen under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, the record plays superbly. Clean with excellent shine and appearing modestly used. A lovely copy with the earliest matrix stampers I have seen for ages, this should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This prog-rock classic, plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A superb production with complex music from virtuoso rock musicians. The incredible detail and clarity has to be heard. Equally well pressed and few come close to a first issue Plum copy for ultimate detail and delivery of the music. All the intricate sounds, vocals and instruments fully focused and precise with minimal hint of surface sound, and no tracking issues*. Those beautiful bass-lines of the late, great Chris Squire are breathtaking, another great musician quite recently lost to us. Even the difficult short Wakeman instrumental ‘Cans and Brahms’ and the gorgeous acoustic guitar piece ‘Mood For a Day’ play superbly well, the guitar was simply in the room with me and plays nigh-on blemish-free. I have rarely heard ‘Cans and Brahms’ cleaner or better, this is often rife with crackle and distortion. The final test: that door reopening with preceeding silence – so often seen marked by premature lifting of the arm when owner’s thought the album had ended – again little unwanted. The rare tingle factor was achieved several times on this one, only the cleanest, best recordings ever achieve this for me. This record could prove difficult to find significantly better and many fans and collectors will enjoy it – the cover may have some wear, but the disc itself is really impressive. Strong recommendation is mandatory.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
