Description
This auction is for a real Mary Chain rarity - it is a band graffitied, hand folded sleeve version of their debut single 'Upside Down' released by Creation Records at the beginning of November 1984. Legend has it that the band and McGee stayed up into the small hours, folding the sleeves for as many of the first 1,000 singles as they could and as the night wore on the band began to scrawl increasingly offensive (!!) messages on the reverse of some sleeves to entertain themselves. These are now very difficult to find and understandably so and my own copy listed here was bought second hand from a bloke behind the desk at Orion Records in Irvine, Ayrshire back in 1990 for a bargain £10. Amusingly it was sold to me rather cheap at the time because - and I quote (minus the expletives) - "The previous owner wrote all over the inside so it's not as rare". Fortunately I already knew that the Reids, Gillespie and Hart's handiwork was on some of the sleeves of the single and gladly snapped it up! This first edition of the band's iconic debut single is also unique as it contained the Reids' home address in East Kilbride on the back cover. This was omitted from all of the various reissues (different colour sleeves) that followed as the single kept on selling and selling into 1985 and beyond. Have a look at the range of accompanying auction pictures so you can see exactly what you are bidding on. This extremely rare edition of the 7" single will be sent extremely well-packaged anywhere in the world and is listed here at a great price given its undeniable rarity coming up to 42 long years since original release. Please note that this is a five day listing only so get your bid in early and don't miss out. Many thanks for looking at this auction and do check out my other current Mary Chain listings.
