Vinyl Condition & Grading: generally Excellent verging on the Excellent +. You would expect an album of this age to be exhibiting pretty heavy use, particularly this title, but no - it's in remarkably good shape. The vinyl itself has soft scuff marks from moving in and out of the inner sleeve but remarkably few other lines running across the groove. Given the fact that even several plays of an LP will inevitably create very soft tracking surface noise, it is delightful to hear how little this pressing has been affected and how unintrusive and surface noise is. Here's a track by track analysis......
Side One:
EXP: Very little surface noise, sounds more like light static to be honest and totally quiet from this track into...
UP FROM THE SKIES: Lovely sound with great separation and no unwanted noise except for a couple of soft ticks as the track ends...
SPANISH CASTLE MAGIC: Nothing can be generally heard except the music
WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW: A couple of faint, soft ticks up to the point where the music kicks in, then just clear and dynamic.
AIN'T NO TELLING: Very quiet from the previous fadeout with gentle tracking surface noise under the music at the end and into...
LITTLE WING: Clear and dynamic and quiet from the fade into...
IF 6 WAS 9: sounds like it was meant to.
Side Two:
YOU GOT ME FLOATIN': Very quiet on the lead-in, and out under the fade to...
CASTLES MADE OF SAND: One fairly positive rounded click in the middle, otherwise fine.
SHE'S SO FINE: If you like this track, you'll be pleased to hear that it's as it should be, and into...
ONE RAINY WISH: Fine, as is...
LITTLE MISS LOVER: and...
BOLD AS LOVE: which finishes the album as it started.
Album Played For Grading: Yes. (Equipment: Linn Sondek LP12, Linn Ekos arm, Linn K9 moving coil cartridge, tracking at 2 grams into a Cambridge Audio Azur 340A amp and out to a pair of Bose speakers with a Super Woofer)
Jimi Hendrix's second album followed up his groundbreaking debut effort with a solid collection of great tunes and great interactive playing between himself, Noel Redding, Mitch Mitchell, and the recording studio itself. Wisely retaining manager Chas Chandler to produce the album and Eddie Kramer as engineer, Hendrix stretched further musically than the first album, but even more so as a songwriter. He was still quite capable of coming up with spacy rockers like "You Got Me Floating," "Up from the Skies," and "Little Miss Lover," radio-ready to follow on the commercial heels of "Foxey Lady" and "Purple Haze." But the beautiful, wistful ballads "Little Wing," "Castles Made of Sand," "One Rainy Wish," and the title track set closer show remarkable growth and depth as a tunesmith, harnessing Curtis Mayfield soul guitar to Dylanesque lyrical imagery and Fuzz Face hyperactivity to produce yet another side to his grand psychedelic musical vision. These are tempered with Jimi's most avant-garde tracks yet, "EXP" and the proto-fusion jazz blowout of "If 6 Was 9."
