JOE MEEK and the BLUE MEN – I Hear A New World: An Outer Space Music Fantasy. Wah Wah Records LPS-254. Spanish release. SEALED BLACK VINYL RECORD ALBUM. Originally issued in 1960. This edition issued in 2025 and pressed on black vinyl. Featuring the Blue Men. Directed by Rod Freeman. There is also a limited pressing of 150 copies (as per Discogs) on purple vinyl (check my listings).

DESCRIPTION:  In 1960, Joe Meek -- already thinking in terms that couldn't be constrained by the limits of the day's technologies and marketing strategies -- devised a "concept LP" of sorts that speculated about the nature of life on the moon (this was almost ten years before Apollo 11). Working with a group of musicians he dubbed the Blue Men, this "outer space music fantasy" tried to conjure the mood of the cosmos with the clavioline, a Hawaiian guitar, a rinky-dink piano, and then-futuristic electronic noises and sound effects. Listening today, the largely instrumental work sounds futuristic in a very dated way, especially the Chipmunks-like, electronically sped-up voices that were meant to simulate those little green men. Just the same, it's an interesting insight into his unique production techniques -- the sounds he sculpted for Magnetic Field, for instance, are a clear forerunner of the electronic pulses that open and close Telstar. Only four tracks from the opus were released at the time, on a super-rare EP. Now, 65 years later, this Wah Wah reissue LP of  I Hear A New World presents the full work to the public for  one more chance to be “experienced.” "I wanted to create a picture in music of what could be up there in outer space," Meek said in an interview. A nontraditional artist in every sense, Joe Meek was a producer who didn't play or sing on this or any other album. He was also a deeply troubled man. Meek suffered from depression and paranoia and was known for explosive tantrums. A closeted homosexual, Meek was once arrested for soliciting for "immoral" purposes after he apparently made a pass at an undercover policeman in an era when public scorn, fear and anger buried homosexuals under social taboos and criminal law. But Meek's swirling, unpredictable emotions seemed to contribute to his creativity. Thought of as somewhat of a studio mad scientist, he became a legend for experimenting with stereo technology and with any effects he could conjure up. Meek was making British rock history before the "invasion," years and before The Beatles would even release an album. The album landed in the wasteland outside pop culture, failing Meek's attempts to market it as a demo album for stereo equipment salespeople. In the next few years Meek's life began to unravel. Then, in Feburary, 1967, he fatally shot himself in the head after shooting his landlady in the back. I Hear A New World vanished after Meek's suicide, until the intended album was first issued on RPM Records in 1991.     (LP)

All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers with inside packing.

MIX:  This sometimes appears in my title line and refers to a group's/artist's music having a mix of styles such a rock track with jazz then followed by a straight rock track followed by a psych rock track, etc., as opposed to a blues album with the album's tracks having predominantly one style.
