Description

Up for auction is a very nice copy of the John Coltrane album Soultrane, originally released in the U.S. on Prestige Records (PRLP 7142) in 1958:
-Guaranteed original pressing, not reissue -Correct black & yellow "fireworks" Prestige labels -Correct and matching Bergenfield, NJ address on labels and cover -Original Mono pressing -RVG Rudy Van Gelder mastering etched in deadwax
-Original deep groove labels -Original laminated, paste-down cover -Heavy inflexible vinyl -No UPC/bar code on cover -Vinyl comes in audiophile protective poly sleeve
Condition: The Cover presents beautifully, still has its original glossy lamination.
-No ring wear or significant rubbing or dulling to the front finish, just a hint of age foxing to the bright white upper half (see photos).
-Seams are strong, intact, no splits, no cracks, no crazing.
-Corners are generally still sharp, with one upper right having a small crease (see photo).
-Corners show some tiny chipping, but not serious (see photos).  Back looks clean and bone white as it should be, text is clean, no rubbing wear.
-Has former owner's name tag in upper left corner (see photo).
-And upper left corner shows light wear.
-Overall, a very attractive original in highly collectible condition. Grade: Very Good Plus Plus (VG++), significantly better than typical VG+ copies
Vinyl is also very attractive, still retains most of its original shine.
-Under a strong light, a couple faint superficial hairlines show up on Side Two, Track 3, but in no way do they affect the quality of the audio which is excellent.
-Also under a strong light, it shows some faint, superficial signs of having been taken out of inner sleeve a few times.
-Labels are clean, unmarked, and spindle holes look clean with no significant signs of wear.
-Overall, looks like this record has perhaps been played only a few times but handled with care. Visual Grade:
Side One: Very Good Plus Plus (VG++) Side Two: Very Good Plus (VG+)
Spot Play-Tested: I have spot play tested this record, and when played in the recommended Mono Mode, the sound quality overall is excellent.  There is some typical light background pressing noise on the run-in grooves, but once the music kicks in, it fades out, and the beautiful full-bodied mono sound takes over.  No snap, crackle, pop.  Not audiophile perfect, but none of these original pressings are, but this copy is clear and enjoyable to listen to. Audio Grade (both sides): Very Good Plus Plus (VG++)
