JOHN HANDY & ALI AKBAR KHAN: “Karuna Supreme” (MPS Records – KUX-12-P) (Record: Near Mint/ Jacket: Near Mint) Original Japanese press. Fantastic East meets West improv collision taking you to Indian induced jazzy sounds. Released in 1977. Line-up consists of John Handy (Alto sax), Ali Akbar Khan (sarod), Zakir Hussain (Tabla) & Yagish S. Sahota (tambura). Stunning all way round. Excellent merger of Indian sounds and free-flowing grooves and spiritual jazz patterns. Ali Akbar Khan’s playing is stunning, elevating the Sarod towards a higher plane. The fusion of those two styles – jazz and Indian classical music - works wonderfully well. Together the quartet is responsible for creating some highly intoxicated psychedelic raga jazz that will elevate you to higher planes. Recommended to those in awe for the works of Alice Coltrane, Emil Richards, Joe Harriot Indo-Jazz Fusions, Coltrane. Just great. Original Japanese press.
