Brief Artist & Album Info: Lennon’s first great ‘Solo’ album, arguably the best he ever made. A hugely powerful set where Lennon allowed his tonsils and heart to bleed in a powerful exhumation of his demons. This includes the brilliant ‘Working Class Hero’, one of my personal favourites and every song included here is magnificent, personal and powerful. After the early solo albums which offered little in the way of ‘music’, but were more collages of avant garde experimentalism that all sold very poorly, this was something of a revelation and a massive return to form and public attention. It charted at 11 in the UK and paved the way for greater success thereafter. A monumental issue and never easy to find complete as an early pressing that includes the dedicated inner sleeve in unusually immaculate condition. This is a copy that does this classic nigh-on maximum justice and fans of the legendary ex-Beatle are sure to enjoy it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single fully laminated format. Printed and made in England and includes the original dedicated lyric inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: A thin and flimsy cover, so often prone to laminate issues, this has very few. Both sides retain superb shine, freshness and clarity with barely any lifting – a tiny trace on the back bottom right corner, any dulling light around the rim seen under light. With a thick record inside for the best part of 45+ years, can this be any real surprise? A couple of fine laminate creases on the front but hardly any others, these show little with normal full-on viewing. Slight rim impression only, and this vintage cover will prove difficult to find much better – the back is especially is exceptional.

Top Edge: Totally immaculate: unworn,very smooth, clean and very straight. Being so thin, this is fantastic.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with barely any wear, any burring or thickening little and light, that being quite unusual for card this thin, this is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Viewing end-on really reiterates just how thin the card is only cover. The record enters on this edge, the fine unprotected strips where the laminate ends, still present and both unworn and clean.

Spine and Text: Incredibly thin, by standards of most spines, wafer thin. Solid, mainly straight, especially so for one like this. One small, minor scuff registers little. The text is almost perfect – a tiny clip trace being critical, also incredibly well centred on a near non-existent depth, this strongly suggests it has suffered no compression – every copy of this album I have seen has a very thin spine.

Corners: Superb and barely worn corners that retain better than excellent to near mint shape with no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: A very impressive all-round example of this famous 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This attractive, and somewhat delicate item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: PRACTICALLY MINT: the very best I have ever seen bar none. An unlined lyric insert with the original small graphic and dedication to Yoko from John (as seen in close-up). The one owner from new was so particular, he put a soft lined inner inside. This had that tight and clingy feel when I tried to remove the record, I doubt if this had seen light-of-day for decades. A typically fragile and thin paper inner that looks as clean and fresh as new. The lack of paper ageing, toning and darkening makes for an exceptional sight, this has also avoided creasing or edge splits. This highly personal inner sleeve will prove near impossible to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and really deserving a Mint(–) grading – as stated, the one owner put a soft lined inner sleeve inside the unlined inner. There is the merest hint of dulling from this seen very critically under light and totally invisible in average room light. On a scale of 1 to 10 – barely even a 1 – but I mention all I see. This is very clean with superb shine and solidly pressed, this appears hardly even played. Under my very bright grading light, any surface traces are ultra fine and faint, the odd tiny blemish in the pressing from manufacture that does absolutely nothing – this record plays beautifully. This is a lovely very early-made record that will please many, if not most collectors, I have rarely seen or heard better.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Lennon classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A very powerful and dynamic production gives this album real edge and drama. Any surface barely even registered with no tracking issues*, I enjoyed this copy immensely. The warmth and emotion of this powerful album shines through and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading. It has to be Lennon’s most personal and powerful album, this is a genuine classic. It appears barely even run-in in vinyl terms, it will prove immensely difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Do not underestimate how difficult this one is find like this, an album I have several times with considerable noise and even occasionally, pressing issues which this example has avoided.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
