Please note! This album is listed for its collectability rather than for its condition. This is not mint. This is totally complete and genuine very early pressing. Features Earliest "1B" & "1B" Matrix Endings and Earliest "1" to "1" Mother stampers! (Earliest for the best audio quality on vinyl) The audio is very clear and vibrant and very playable in my opinion. Please note , there is some ticks noted that were heard in some quieter places but importantly no distortion or signs that this has been over played in my opinion. Blues from Laurel Canyon is a 1968 album by John Mayall, featuring British blues music. It was his first album after the breakup of his band the Bluesbreakers on 14 July 1968. It was also his last album with Decca before moving to Polydor.




John Mayall sings and plays harmonica, organ and guitar on the album. Other musicians include a young Mick Taylor (guitar), Colin Allen (drums) and Stephen Thompson (bass).




The guitarist Peter Green is featured on the track First Time Alone. The engineer was Derek Varnals. All the songs on the album were written by Mayall.



The title of the album derives from Laurel Canyon, California, USA (in the Los Angeles area) where John Mayall subsequently lived from 1969 to 1979.




It forms a record of his visit there before moving to the US on a more permanent basis. The area was favoured by many musicians at the time. It was recorded at Decca Studios in West Hampstead, London, England between 26 and 28 August 1968, and was released on the Decca label.





The album was innovative for its time, especially by the standards of blues recordings. The first track opens with a recording of a jet airliner landing, dissolving into the driving rhythm of the song.




There were no visible track divisions on the vinyl album. Some songs fade or segue into the next track, others stop on a chord which is immediately followed by the introduction of the next track.








Tabla drums are used, as is the technique of hitting guitar strings with a drumstick. The final track is a long song which moves into an extended lead guitar solo underscored by Mayall's Hammond organ, fading into a simple unaccompanied guitar figure which repeats until it too fades.






The lyrics are autobiographical and refer, if obliquely, to people Mayall met on his first visit, such as Frank Zappa and Moon Unit Zappa (on 2401), the band Canned Heat (on The Bear), and famous groupie, Catherine James (on Miss James).



From a technical point of view, the album demonstrates the limitations of the recording technology of the time. A substantial number of vinyl albums were issued in monophonic format, since many home record players, at least in the United Kingdom, could not reproduce stereophonic sound. On the stereophonic releases, including the CD re-releases, the stereo imaging separates the instruments quite strongly. For instance, in the song Walking on Sunset, the drumkit, situated on the left, is inaudible in the right hand channel. The overall impression is that of being in a hallway with several rooms off it, each one containing a particular instrument. There is no sense of being in a room with several instruments playing and generating an ambient sound-field, as might be expected from a live recording, or one mixed with more available sound inputs.

The Vinyl

This is the original thicker , heavier chunky slab of vinyl only found like this on the earliest 1969 original pressings! (Later press are much more flimsier and less robust)

The vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable and is free of any warps. (I have double checked this there is no warping) The vinyl has retained its original sheen and initially looks really clean! Only close inspection I notice some fine needle scratches on the playing surface some of these do cause static ticks that are heard in isolated quiet places during the play (especially noted on side two )   importantly there are no skips or jumps!

The audio quality

I have played this track for track at very loud volume prior to listing at very loud volume. From the moment that the needle hits the playing surface , it is obvious that this vinyl not only visually but audibly has just had minimal play in my opinion for a 48 year old record! The audio is stunning crystal clear and vibrant, very bright and clear throughout without any signs of distortion at all and plays with a lovely deep bassey feel only found like this on early pressings! Please note! Static type ticks are noted heard especially on side two in a few places and during quiet places. There are no skips or jumps.    I would grade the audio at least excellent for the most part in my opinion! (Interference noted on side 2) A constant cleaning before each play is recomended because this has been stored laying dormant for over 40 years!

The Labels

These are the original grooved UNBOXED DECCA labels (Later pressed featurea Boxed Decca Logo)  (only early 1969 issued UK press.) The labels are rich in color and are clean all text is readable. It is obvious to me that this vinyl has only had very minimal play only .  The spindle hole is free of any wear and of course is perfectly round! Spidering can be seen angled to the light but is minimal on both sides in my opinion. There is little if no spindle wear the hole is perfectly round!

This is the original Decca sleeve  (Only 1969 pressings) no edge splits Please note! There is light creasing/Yellowing/browning/staining with age! Please remember that this is 46 years old. Features 'Made In Great Britain and patented"

The Cover

This Is a UK issue  Laminated Front Only cover Robert Stace Gatefold Cover! Lovely and bright with no signs of yellowing, No splits or tares. All text can be read at the spine no nasty crushing that is normally seen on these.   All text is readable! No nasty ringware and super glossy! Note! There are some creases in the laminate both front and back corners to mention. Graded at excellent in my opinion!
