Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh with strong colour. Spindle marks are only very light / light+ with most being quite fine and faint. A very modestly played first issue reitterated with lovely clean sound, just the way mono collectors want them.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. A typical quality very solidly pressed Decca record.

Rarity: Very scarce in mono: this a late issue in that mode and finding first ‘1’ examples this clean is very difficult indeed. For those who still chose the mono format towards the end of the decade, did so in most all cases to play them on mono record players. And collectors will invariably know what that so often means.

Brief Info: Eleven songs that track Mayall’s musical progression over the previous five years and including the host of blues stars and musicians listed above. Looking Back is a collection of his Decca singles, most are scarce and the tracks are in dynamic mono - this album was briefly available in both modes. This is a superb collection for the blues fan by arguably the greatest artist of the genre ever. A wonderful opportunity to own this scarce unboxed mono original in lovely clean condition, this was a joy from beginning to end.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and a mere whisker from the extra (+), this is a lovely looking example. Laminated with Clarifoil front and back and a gatefold format with the front being only single thickness card making the perils of creasing and laminate issues all the more obvious. This was printed and made in England by Clout & Baker and has the mono/stereo peep-hole on the back. In this case, the deep red inner fills this hole and denotes this is a rarer mono example.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains a very fine more semi-glossy sheen which on this cover was correct. With fine freshness and clarity and very little creasing – remarkably, barely on the thin front at all. The back has one surface crease near the spine edge, any others are very fine and faint and show little. As per the majority of Clarifoil laminate covers, the spine edge has tightened with a reasonably narrow lift each side. This has not cracked or peeled and actually has only modest visual impact with normal viewing. Clarifoil the most susceptable for this trait of contraction, and either it lifts or the cover bows, and this one has avoided that. Even under angled light, barely any dulling or surface marks at all, this clearly has been carefully cover protected and the difference almost immediately apparent. The artwork retains rich vivid colour and this sleeve has aged little, the peep-hole on the back is pristine and shows barely any laminate drift or movement at all. Just a tiny rub on the bottom front right corner tip. A cover to hold and enjoy, they seldom get seen a great deal better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is in amazing, almost as new condition, barely anything worthy of mention bar the same tiny tip rub, this has avoided any ageing and even creasing.

Top Edges: Minimal traces of wear, even the front single thickness card edge has largely avoided any thickening and any burr traces are minuscule.

Bottom Edges: Very slight thickening to the traditional storage edges that few will avoid. The lack of heavy burring and chipping is what sets this one apart. No feathering and any thickening light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with minimal traces of wear or thickening. No feathering either, these thin card edges often soften and separate, well not this one which is strong proof the record has hardly made the trip out. Both edges are guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A superb spine: solid, straight with minimal traces of compression. Folded square, the edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. This all adds to the neatness and visual pleasure to a gatefold cover. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. The surface remains ultra smooth to the fingertip with no even a single scuff or crack at all. They rarely get seen better than this.

Corners: Just the small tip rub to the front bottom right as mentioned already. Little else to fault and all retain excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: A beautiful all-round example of this somewhat fragile late 60’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This hugely impressive item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and a deep red to indicate a mono copy through the peep-hole at the back of the main cover. Lined and a very deep shade, this has aged little with just a couple of corner creases and no splits or tears (or repairs). The window circles practically as made and undamaged with a very clear lining with minimal crinkle. None of the usual glue browning on the seams which all remain unsplit and any rub traces very small and slight. This is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably, undergraded as such for a vintage mono. These invariably too the most wear from heavy tracking record players of the day. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed on top quality Decca vinyl. These late unboxed monos I consider very special and only sold in modest numbers. This has been played very little with any surface marks very fine, few and faint. Maybe just the merest trace of inner sleeve mottle on the first song on side one, but totally harmless and only seen with utmost scrutiny under light. This record was not even that easy to remove from it’s polylined inner and I would be sure it had not seen light-of-day for decades. Visually impressive and it should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent quality Decca record plays even beyond it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The song ‘They Call it Stormy Monday’ is one exception: this is a live track with less than studio quality sound, it’s raw audio quality often means this can sound quite rough and often affected more by heavy plays or a worn stylus. But here it plays as good as it should, but the sound is naturally down on rest of the studio songs. I have on occasion heard this song break up and even distort on lesser copies. The quality sound will seldom be heard better with most being affected by vintage record players that were never groove-friendly – we have all seen and heard such copies. Any surface sounds barely even register and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing, but as you would expect from Decca – the label I respect above all others for pressing standards. Few available ones will match or outperform this original very early pressed mono copy I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. A record not really designed to be played on high-end stereo equipment, but this gave an outstanding performance via my LP12 which takes no prisoners in revealing all the good (as well as the bad) on any record. Unlike so many of the early monos, this appears unaffected by thick, worn, heavy tracking mono stylus and has been carefully stored and lightly played and with utmost care. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful John Mayall album, up there with his very best for me. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
