Description
This is the very first album of the music of the great Johnny Dodds, The King of New Orleans Clarinets. It is a 1945 set of 4 78rpm records that reissue 8 of his greatest recordings of the 1920s released on the Brunswick label. In the early 40s came the first wave of record collecting and the older jazz records of the 1920s were first reaching their legendary status, and since they were long out of print some record companies started reissuing the earlier records. Brunswick started what they called their Collector's Series at this time, and this album is number B-1020 of that series. Dodds had, as you all probably know, been in the famous Louis Armstrong Hot Five and Hot Seven, who made some of the most beloved and important jazz records of the era, and many of these discs feature Armstrong, Earl Hines, Johnny St. Cyr, and brother Baby Dodds all from the Hot five and Seven. These are some of the greatest jazz recordings of all time. And this copy is just beautiful. All four discs are just about mint, and look barely played. The cover is in pretty good shape with a perfectly intact spine, and only a little corner and edge wear, AND it comes with the rare booklet giving information about his life and the records. This is truly a top, beautiful copy. The discs include:
