WE CAN THINK OF NO OTHER MORE INFLUENTIAL OR IMPORTANT FEMALE SINGER-SONGWRITER OF THE PAST 50 YEARS THAN JONI. OVER THE YEARS, JONI MITCHELL DEFIED CATEGORIES, DATED EVERYONE OF ANY RENOWN IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS, AND CREATED SOME TRULY LUMINOUS, GORGEOUS MUSIC, THE IMPORTANCE AND SHEER HONESTY OF WHICH TRANSCEND THE AGES. THIS ALBUM, WHICH CAME OUT IN 1970, IS - TO OUR EARS - ONE OF HER FINEST AND GREATEST TO DATE. THE ALBUM ENDS WITH A ONE-TWO-THREE PUNCH: THREE OF JONI'S GREATEST AND MOST POPULAR SONGS: (BIG YELLOW TAXI; WOODSTOCK, AND CIRCLE GAME);  MODERN SINGER-SONGWRITER FOLK DOES NOT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS.

This wonderfully varied release shows a number of new tendencies in Joni Mitchell's work, some of which would come to fuller fruition on subsequent albums. "The Arrangement," "Rainy Night House," and "Woodstock" contain lengthy instrumental sections, presaging the extensive non-vocal stretches in later selections such as "Down to You" from Court and Spark. Jazz elements are noticeable in the wind solos of "For Free" and "Conversation," exhibiting an important influence that would extend as late as Mingus. The unusually poignant desolation of "The Arrangement" would surface more strongly in Blue. A number of the selections here ("Willy" and "Blue Boy") use piano rather than guitar accompaniment; arrangements here are often more colorful and complex than before, utilizing cello, clarinet, flute, saxophone, and percussion. Mitchell sings more clearly and expressively than on prior albums, most strikingly so on "Woodstock," her celebration of the pivotal 1960s New York rock festival. This number, given a haunting electric piano accompaniment, is sung in a gutsy, raw, soulful manner; the selection proves amply that pop music anthems don't all have to be loud production numbers. Songs here take many moods, ranging from the sunny, easygoing "Morning Morgantown" (a charming small-town portrait) to the nervously energetic "Conversation" (about a love triangle in the making) to the cryptically spooky "The Priest" (presenting the speaker's love for a Spartan man) to the sweetly sentimental classic "The Circle Game" (denoting the passage of time in touching terms) to the bouncy and vibrant single "Big Yellow Taxi" (with humorous lyrics on ecological matters) to the plummy, sumptuous title track (a celebration of creativity in all its manifestations). This album is yet another essential listen in Mitchell's recorded canon.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         CAUTION! The vinyl is only VERY GOOD (-)- TO VERY GOOD, with multiple, numerous, small scuffs and scratches which are BOTH visible AND audible. The record plays with light and tolerable BUT AUDIBLE surface noise and occasional pops and clicks. The record plays without skipping throughout. This record WAS play-graded.

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 50:1.

(d)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-       The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging; Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-       Cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity (nothing significant)

-       Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the opening side (nothing significant)

-       Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams

-       Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-       A large (over 3 square inches in size) tear in the paper slick noted on the inside gatefold). Oddly, despite its bothersome size, the tear somehow manages not to affect any liner notes or song lyrics. Only a minor section of the paper slick (roughly 1/4 sq. inch) is missing; this can be neatly repaired.
