FANTASIA Lp by JUAN ALMEIDA. Original Cuban 1st pressing on the red ARIETO label (LD 3579) from circa early '70s. Maverick and futuristic re-working of the famous Fantasia suite arranged in a strange pop / cuban funk cum trippy soundtrack style. Truly unusual / experimental and psychedelic mood music. For us, absolutely the best Areito release. Unique arrangements with stoned electronics / other-worldly percussion / a horn section with Arabian scales / jazz / James Brown cum blaxploitation sound in places / insane drum patterns / hip hop beats / classical piano / acid guitars / Mary Mayo style voices and reverb heavy fuzz distortions a la Stark Reality ;) Shades of IL Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza (plucked piano strings / metallic notes etc) on here too. The whole recording is superb. Includes a killer funk theme called RITMO ABIERTO with heavy B-boy drums and electronics and other exotic themes with cinematic strings / vocal chorus / synthesizers and groovy latin basslines. This Lp was never mentioned in the Forbidden Fruits / Funky Cuba music scene article in Waxpoetics and the aggressive funk tune has never been included on any compilation to date. A latin masterpiece by Almeida and no doubt a revelation for collectors / DJs and producers who do not know it. Many cool samples throughout these strangely beautiful and funky themes too.The ultimate cosmic Cuban prog session. Our soundclip opens with the Stark Reality-esque fuzz interludes and some funky breaks / samples (just a teaser or 2 of things to come :) followed by most of the full suite. The fabulous RITMO ABIERTO is circa 20min into the clip. Outstanding music for fashion shows (we've aready used our own copy for one show, at least) and great for DJs. Ghostly avantgarde artwork sleeve to die for and super-tuff to find in nice condition. Rare Lp!!!

Our record grading: SEALED / M- / VG++ / VG+ / VG 

Vinyl is in shiny, VG++ condition overall with some hairlines and faded, star splash old pressing marks from compressed contact with the original plastic inner. Surface noises but to be expected from an early '70s Cuban record, in general. Also some soft pops / ticks (as you can hear on the soundclip too). Blotchy marks / ink fading to labels. Name of previous owner etched into the inner deadwax of one side. The laminated, soft card sleeve is in VG++ condition overall with some ring wear / ring dirt marks and some creasing from storage. Corner and edge wear in places. Sharp looking item overall. Dirt smudge mark to middle front sleeve. Camera flash glare to sleeve and label photo. Rare Lp!!!
