Although the underdeveloped sci-fi/fantasy-based storyline makes this record collapse under its own weight, on purely musical terms it's a rather nifty art rock collectible. The strident female vocals give this a human quality many similarly ambitious art rock efforts lack, and the organ-based arrangements are more accessible to pop-oriented ears than many keyboard-based prog rock opuses are. A couple of the tunes -- the lovely ballad "Altarra, Princess of the Blue Women," and the propulsive "Fourth from the Sun" -- even carried some hit potential, as absurd as that might seem. The 1990 British CD reissue on See For Miles, slightly retitled A Time Before This...Plus, adds five tracks that are hardly inconsequential. Although the sources for these tracks are not discussed in the accompanying liner notes, and bear a copyright date of 1973, they are in fact quite similar in arrangement, songwriting, and tone to the material on the Time Before This Album, favoring somewhat more extended structures (the five tunes total almost 25 minutes). Perhaps these were intended for use on leader/keyboardist/songwriter Julian Jay Savarin's solo album Waiters on the Dance (1973), which was part two of the trilogy that A Time Before This was supposed to inaugurate.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new (SIDE 3 IS SOMEWHAT INFERIOR TO THE REMAINING THREE SIDES AND IS SEPARATELY GRADED AS VG+).

(b)          The records comes in the original “Made in Great Britain” stock inner sleeves.

(c)           The records are  pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams

-        Cover has visible wrinkles (creases) across both front and back panels

-         The laminated cover has a few air 'bubbles' and wrinkles in lamination (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side and spine (nothing significant)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2

-         The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No yellowing from aging

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
