Brief Info: I regard this album as a largely overlooked classic. Here Julie sings virtually all her own songs and the choice of Mickie Most as producer inspired. A truly beautiful album that probably went largely unnoticed with rather a dark cover with no information on the front who the lady even is. Well the back reveals a host of major talents as her backing band including Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, drummer Cozy Powell, Free’s Rabbit and the virtuoso double-bassist Danny Thompson of Pentangle (amongst others). What a shame Julie was not photographed with a colour picture and more information, surely this would have attracted more attention? The inside however is stunning, just look at that magnificent colourful centrefold which is an absolute work of art. Anyone who thought she was just a fine cover’s version folk singer with acoustic guitar, think again. This is Julie Felix now playing more rocky material and opening out with a stunning backing band. For those who missed this first-time-round, well give this gorgeous album a try, few will be disappointed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front: Little to fault on this rather unexciting grainy black and white picture of Julie. Not even any text included to attract attention. Still few marks marks, barely any creasing with any small rubs near the very edges or corner tip. No sticker marks either, this is fine.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same with just small traces of minor burring on the left entrance edge. The lack of ring wear on such covers is always great news.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is simply stunning with barely no wear at all. And what a contrast to the outside, this is very colourful with most glorious and beautiful graphics.

Top Edges: Hardly any wear to either.

Bottom Edges: A little fine rubbing to the darker back.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring light and mainly on the outside back edge as mostly seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. A little rubbing to the ends and a graze below the top text, also a small rub to the first word of the title, but most text intact. Both fold hinges largely devoid of wear.

Corners: Light tip rubbing with fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this clearly wear-prone early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. A few mainly light blemishes but this elusive cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only marked down for age toning around the seam. A heavy-duty polylined white inner with two immaculate crisp window circles and very clear crinkle-free lining. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: side two (+). A fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with just a couple of fine surface marks on side one, with any others very fine and faint hairline types that have no affect on sound. There are no penetrating scratches on this record that appears quite modestly played. Visually a lovely 42-year-old record that should please many collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality folk-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. This is Julie singing mostly her own compositions with a top quality backing band as listed further up. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally quite well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive and quite elusive record. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
