♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫

Until her untimely death in 2003, Jutta Hipp, the legendary bop piano pioneer, was a member of the Jackson Heights Art Club in Jackson Heights, Queens, and would occasionally display her drawings and paintings at the outdoor exhibit space adjacent to the Public School 69, in Jackson Heights, Queens on the corner of 78th street and 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights, NY.

This little bit of trivia would be completely irrelevant for this auction if it were not for the fact that this outdoor exhibit space is (literally) only about 30 meters (yards) away from this seller’s apartment. Until about 5 years ago, I used to see Jutta Hipp every Sunday (except on rainy and cold weekends). I finally gathered courage to introduce myself to her merely a year or so prior to her death and was fascinated by her warm, humane simplicity and her down-to-earth approach to art and people. She is sorely missed.

This album comes from the estate of the recently deceased elderly MEMBER of the Jackson Heights Art Club who was a close personal friend of Jutta Hipp (we bought it from the administrator of his estate); however, we are unable to establish any clear link between the album and Jutta herself. In other words, we cannot and do not guarantee that the album was ever in Jutta’s personal possession. Any link between the two is purely circumstantial.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            CAUTION! The vinyl is only GOOD- (G-) , with multiple, numerous, scratches which are BOTH visible AND audible. Nevertheless, the record plays fine and without skipping, without any distortion BUT with considerable and audible hiss, surface noise and numerous clicks and pops. This record WAS play-graded.

(b)            This album is presented here mostly for its historical value and as a very rare item, which can be exceedingly difficult to find in any other condition

(c)             The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)            The record has an "ear" symbol (a pretzel-like engravure about 1/4-inch/6mm long) in the trail-off vinyl, which on SOME jazz and blues labels (such as Blue Note; Folkways; Period, etc…) is associated with very early or first pressings). The 'ear' symbol is actually a letter 'P' in italic script, denoting a pressing made by Plastilite Corporation’s pressing plant.

(e)             The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(f)              The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(g)            Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, GLOSSY, LIGHTLY LAMINATED COVER):

THE COVER IS ONLY ABOUT GOOD+++ (G+++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split, as follows:

-         Top seam: between 4 and 6 inches / 10 to 15 centimeters.

-         Bottom seam: between 6 and 8 inches /15 to 20 centimeters.

-         Spine: between 6 and 8 inches /15 to 20 centimeters.

-         The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side (nothing significant).

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Back cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker (less than 1/8 square inch in size)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No wrinkles or creases

-         No writing

-         No stamps

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels

-         No water damage

-         No warping

-         No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-         No glue traces or wax residue.

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
