· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) CAUTION! The vinyl is only GOOD+(+), with multiple, numerous, small scuffs and scratches which are BOTH visible AND audible. The record plays with light and tolerable BUT AUDIBLE surface noise and occasional pops and clicks. The record “sticks” (repeats the same groove) once, at the end of “Violets for your furs” which the buyer may be able to correct by adjusting stylus pressure and calibration; otherwise, the tonearm will have to be manually repositioned to allow the playback to continue. This record WAS play-graded.
(b) A note about the condition of this record: as you can see, the condition of this album is not mint or near mint; however, we will never stop marveling at how these old records, despite their wear and tear STILL manage to play almost an entire level above their visual grade. Simply put: the record plays much better than it looks. The record plays with very little – practically NO - distortion.
(c) This album is presented here mostly for its historical value and as a very rare item, which can be exceedingly difficult to find in any other condition
(d) The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).
(e) The record has an "ear" symbol (a pretzel-like engravure about 1/4-inch/6mm long) in the trail-off vinyl, which on SOME jazz and blues labels (such as Blue Note; Folkways; Period, etc…) is associated with very early or first pressings). The 'ear' symbol is actually a letter 'P' in italic script, denoting a pressing made by Plastilite Corporation’s pressing plant.
(f) The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.
(g) The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(h) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER
THE COVER IS ONLY ABOUT GOOD++ (G++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split; all three seams have been taped with unseemly, black electrical isolation tape about an inch wide. The tape is applied in multiple pieces and the taping could have been done with more respect to the artwork and the integrity of the cover. Nevertheless, we ASSUME (but we are not absolutely certain) that the tape may be possible to remove with a little effort and perhaps restore the cover to a more natural, closer-to-original cover. On the upside, the tape does not offend or affect any of the graphics or the liner notes on the back cover, only the white (blank) margins of the cover.
- Front cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker (partially covered by the tape). The visible area is less than ¼ square inch in size.
- Cover also has a small peel-off mark (actually a chip/dent along the opening) about ¾ square inch in size on the back cover, and about ¼ square inch on the front cover.
- Cover has 3 small tears / dents on the opening (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY), none larger than ½ inch
- Back cover has a small, rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Cover shows some yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
- Cover has all four corners visibly worn / frayed /dinged.
- Cover has some ring wear; On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3.
- A few minor grayish spots / stains on the back cover noted
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No writing
- No stamps
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No warping
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
- No glue traces or wax residue.
- No bar codes
- No RIAA stamps or stickers.
