This LP is titled "presenting...jackie mclean", on the adlib label, ad lib 6601, The New Tradition, Vol. 1.
This is the Jackie McLean Quintet
featuring Donald Byrd on trumpet, Mal Waldron on piano, Douglas Watkins on bass and Ronald Tucker on drums.
This is a very rare LP, beautifully done with the fire that is McLean's hallmark. Donald Byrd also sounds great here.
The tunes are: It's You or No One, Blue Doll, Little Melonae, The Way You Look Tonight, Mood Malody, Lover Man (alto sax solo).
This music was recorded in 1955 and has somewhat of the sound of the early Jazz Messengers, probably due to the presence of Byrd and Watkins, and the inclusion of "It's You or No One".
The cover artwork is by Parboo Singh.
The year 2000 Goldmine Price Guide lists the prices for this album as $250, $500 and $1000 depending on condition. So the grading of this record requires even more care than usual.
The album jacket has no splits. There is a place along the bottom center where there is some shelf wear. The front of the jacket also shows some shelf wear. If I were grading any other album cover, I would say that this is in VG+ condition, and that is what I am gradin this album jacket. If someone is seriously interested in obtaining this rare rare album, contact me and I will take many more detailed photos and send them to you.
As I state in my profile, I do "play" grading, and do not base my grade on a visual inspection of the vinyl. To my way of thinking, if there are light mars and or scratches on the record surface but you can hear abolutely NO trace of that when listening, then those defects do not impact my grade. But for this LP, I will do both visual and play grading.
This LP has a few minor scuffs and scratches that do not affect the listening experience. That makes it a VG+ per Goldmine. Upon listening, I hear no surface noise, clicks or pops, so I grade this vinyl as VG+.
