This is a still-sealed copy of “Jailhouse Blues,” released by Rosetta Records in 1987. Original pressing. Note: the images of the inner gatefold and record label in the photos were taken of my personal copy of the record, not the copy for sale.


The album features field recordings of solo and group singing by female prisoners at Parchman Penitentiary in Mississippi for the Library of Congress. The recordings were made by John A. Lomax (father of Alan Lomax) in 1936 and by Herbert Halpert in 1939.


The album’s extensive liner notes are printed in the inner gatefold and conclude on the back cover. There are notes by Bernice Johnson Reagon (founder of the a cappella women’s group Sweet Honey in the Rock), Rosetta Reitz (founder of Rosetta Records) and folklorist Cheri L. Wolfe. The inner gatefold also includes black and white images from the 1930s era Farm Security Administration’s photo collection. The photographs include images made by Dorothea Lange and Marion Post Wolcott.


The album's cover image is from a collage by Romare Bearden, a highly regarded African-American artist.


Rosetta Records was founded and run by Rosetta Reitz (1924-2008), an American feminist and jazz historian. The label focused on releasing historic recordings of female jazz and blues musicians.
