This handsome LP – a still-sealed copy – from Westminister (W-9077, US pressing, label iteration unknown, mono) features one of the more elusive LPs in Antonio Janigro's distinguished discography, his masterful renditions of Prokofiev's Sonata for Cello and Piano in C Major Op. 119 and Shostakovich's Sonata for Cello and Piano OP. 40, both recorded with pianist Eva Wollmann in the warm acoustics of the Mozartsaal, Vienna, July 1956.

Those who think Rostropovich had the last word in these two works would do well to investigate Janigro's readings, which offer insights of their own. The recording is first class.

Incidentally, there are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Abraham Skulsky, printed in English only. The striking cover design is uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the jacket appears as new – an outstanding collector's copy.

The condition of the LP is MINT. This is a still-sealed, unplayed copy – the ideal collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
