This outstanding LP from Columbia Masterworks (ML 4472, US pressing, gray 6eye label, mono - no stereo edition exists) features Bruno Walter and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra’s resplendent account of Brahms’s Symphony No. 4 in E minor Op. 98, recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York City, on 12 February 1951. Walter brings a lifetime’s wisdom and experience to a score that was a cornerstone of his repertoire, and the NYPO play with unfailing power and eloquence - a landmark in the Brahms discography.
Incidentally, the striking cover photo of Walter was taken by Fred Plaut, while the cover design was executed by Herb Meyer of Monogram. There are superb liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket Morris Hastings, printed in English only.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Though there is very light shelfwear and aging, really this is a fine copy. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – a fine collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
