This beautiful and extremely rare late-issue LP from Chandos (ABRD 1415, German pressing, blue label, DDD) features Neemi Jarvi's perhaps unsurpassed account of Franz Schmidt's beautiful Symphony No. 2 in E-flat Major, recorded with the mighty Chicago Symphony Orchestra 'live' at Orchestra Hall during the concerts of 20, 21, 22, and 25 April 1989. This is truly exalted orchestral playing and conducting by any measure.

Wrote the erudite critic Rob Barnett for musicweb-international in its review of the CD issue:

"The Chicagoans need little recommendation. Their sound is glorious and Chandos advocate it to us with all its damask lustre and density without rendering it opaque. In the Second Symphony there is a lot going on in that first movement which by the way is the one I would commend to someone who has never heard Schmidt before. The brass playing – the composer-specified eight horns, four trumpets - is of legendary splendour from 4.45 onwards in both the first and last movements."

Incidentally, the striking cover art reproduces Arnold Böcklin's "The Surging of the Ocean" (Archiv für Kunst und Geschichte, Berlin). There are authoritative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Matthew Rye, provided in German, English, and French.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor wear at corners, but that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects and the jacket remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and plays without defect – overall, a superb collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
