Available here is an excellent copy of a collectible double-LP: Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the "War of the Worlds". This double-LP with gatefold cover was released in 1978 on Columbia (PC2 35290).
Some background about this fascinating piece:
Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of "The War of the Worlds" is the debut album by composer Jeff Wayne, re-telling the classic story "The War of the Worlds" by H.G. Wells (originally released in 1898). Wayne's LP was released in the UK on June 9, 1978. and uses narration and leitmotifs to carry the story and rhyming melodic lyrics that express the feelings of the various characters. The two-disc album remains a bestseller, having sold 15 million copies worldwide. In 2018, it was named the 32nd best-selling studio album of all time in the UK. It has spawned multiple versions including video games, DVDs, and live tours.
The ambitious work features Academy Award nominated actor Richard Burton, Justin Hayward (of the Moody Blues), Chris Thompson (of Manfred Mann's Earth Band), Phil Lynott (of Thin Lizzy), Julie Covington (of Evita and Rock Follies), and David Essex (Evita, The China Plates). Wayne conducts what would come to be known as the Black Smoke Band and the ULLAdubULLA string orchestra.
This copy is in excellent condition. The vinyl has only a scattering of faint marks, nothing serious and on all four sides a very glossy surface. The gatefold cover is also in great shape, with no seam splits, minor wear and just a tiny bit of paper loss at the bottom of the inside cover. The full-color booklet is in top shape, as are all four labels. The back cover (upper left) has a stamp that says "FOR PROMOTION ONLY / Ownership reserved by CBS / Sale is Unlawful (see photos). All in all, this double LP is in tremendous shape, especially for its age of 42 years.
