Description
For sale is this very scarce vinyl LP of JOHN COLTRANE - IMPRESSIONS on His Master's Voice 1963 in really beautiful condition. This glorious copy is the 1963 U.K. 1st Mono Pressing. It features a laminated front to the sleeve with red banner at the top and black and white HMV logo. The back has 3 flip-backs and is unlaminated with a Garrod & Lofthouse print credit. The disc has black His Master's Voice labels with coloured logo. The catalogue number is CLP.1695. The matrices are:
Side One - A 42 A-1S G Side Two - B 42 B-1S G
At the time of listing this appears to be the only copy of this pressing for sale on eBay.
Condition*: The sleeve is graded EX. The laminated front has no corner creasing. There is very little wear with a very light impression of the disc when held up to the light. The surface, edges and corners have almost no wear. The back is also very tidy. The flip-backs have no lifting and are clean. There is a little darkening overall. There are some signs of handling to the unlaminated areas. The text is clear and unrubbed. Overall a really good sleeve.
The disc is VG+. The surfaces are clean and glossy. Under very harsh light there are a few light surface marks but not many. There is a short, deeper scratch at the very start of Side One. On playback this is audible for about a dozen turns on the run-in groove and across the audience noise at the start and the first four bars of the drum introduction to "India" as a low click.This dissipates as soon as the bass comes in and several bars before Coltrane's sax. The disc has been played through from start to finish and plays beautifully. There is some low crackle here and there and the odd pop. There are no skips. The only other flaw I was able to hear was a very low tick audible for 3 or 4 turns towards the end of Side Two, Track Two "After The Rain" which to my ear was not distracting. Overall a really good copy of this wonderfully mastered 1st Pressing which I recommend highly.

I can only give an honest appraisal based on careful visual inspection and thorough play testing. I do try to describe all significant faults and I certainly won't intentionally hide anything. Please read the description carefully, look at the pictures and make your own mind up. The grading scale I have used goes from G to NM with VG+ as par. In other words: Good (G), Very Good (VG), Very Good+ (VG+), Excellent (EX) and Near Mint (NM). Anything better than that would be Mint and would be listed as new. Anything worse than Good I probably wouldn't be selling.
