"Hooker 'n Heat" - John Lee Hooker (g, vocals); Alan Wilson (p, hca); Henry Vestine (g); Antonio de la Barreda (b); Adolfo de la Parra (dr) When this 2LP set was first released in January 1971, Canned Heat was back to their rhythm 'n' blues roots. The band's line-up had changed only slightly with the return of Henry 'Sunflower' Vestine, Antonio 'Tony' de la Barreda on bass and the veteran Aldolfo de la Parra on drums. Unfortunately, it was also the last performance of the band's co-founder, Alan 'Blind Owl' Wilson, who passed away in September 1970. For all its restraint, "Hooker 'n Heat" is a collaborative effort, split between unaccompanied solos by John Lee Hooker, tracks by the Hooker/Wilson duo, and Allen five as a full band. And it is precisely these collaborations that shine as the greatest work of the band or group. of the soloist. While the band are the LP's namesake - it's likely the band's record label gave the idea for the title, 'Hooker 'n Heat' - don't be fooled as Hooker steers his trademark raw and percussive guitar riffs have become, the whole combo. The epic "Boogie Chillen No. 2" spans 11 1/2 minutes and features the same 'powerhouse' as the original, using canned heat to ignite the verses and simmer on the instrumental parts that follow, where there isn't a weak moment. The band has the greatest share in the success of this session through good repertoire design and planning. She has been able to feature Hooker in a variety of different configurations, as a soloist in his own signature idiom, in a series of fantastic duets with the elder Al Wilson, and as leader of the entire band (apart from Hite who worked on the project and his infectious humor spread from the control room) righteous, filthy Boogie Woogies for some units. Canned Heat made no secret of the fact that their entire Boogie series, spanning three albums, drew inspiration from Hooker's work, so collaborating with him was only natural. Worth a mention is the earth-shattering power of Antonio de la Barreda and Adolfo de la Parra, Heat's Latin American rhythm section, and the studio technique, perhaps a little too impeccable for hookers - but these days just makes it easy no one more shots in a barn. Hooker fans will appreciate this record, and so will Heat fans, and that's a lot of people. Let'em boogie!
