Josh White, "Josh White At Town Hall" (Mercury Records, SR-60672) RARE LP release from folk and blues legend Josh White. Fine live album! It was obtained in the auction of the artifacts of a folk music promoter some years ago, and I've enjoyed having it for a decade. The LP is autographed on the back side. Mr. White wrote: "To my guy Eddie P -- may you live forever and may I never die. God damn your ___ --- you know what I mean. Your guy, Big daddy Josh." In blue ink. Josh also dated his comments near the top of the jacket -- the date is "7/23/66." The LP features Josh White's wife Beverly, singing "(House of the) Rising Sun" and "Half As Much," and also Josh White, Jr., then aged 20. Sidemen include the great bassist Bill Lee (Spike's dad), Bobby Scott (piano), and Sticks Evans (drums). The cover is VG+, with light ringwear on the front -- but you'll be much more interested in the back side, which is Mint-minus. Seams intact. The vinyl is crusty on Side 1 -- lots of surface noise and a few brief scratches, but no skips. Side 1 plays a bit better than it looks. Side 2 is much better -- VG++, plays and looks great. Maybe Eddie really preferred the first 5 songs -- who knows now? Strict grading. Certainly a cool collectible for Josh White fans!
