Baron Elmo proudly presents an obscure but tantalizing branch from the vast tree that is American noise/chaos ensemble Smegma: Solo 1978/1979, the 1980 solo album from JU SUK REET MEATE, a privately pressed, hand-assembled LP issued by the Pigface label. Smegma was a pioneer band in the realm of surrealist music, turning out mind-bending slabs of aural chaos that took rock music's craziest experiments even further. Before admirer Steve Stapleton founded his Nurse with Wound, Smegma was shattering the boundaries of what “rock” music could be. Ju Suk Reet Meate was a founding member who remains with the group to this day... and this, his first solo LP, was even freakier than Smegma. When the De Stijl label reissued this album on CD several years ago, here's how they described the proceedings: “Smegma were formed as a reaction to the band's perceptions of how horrible things were in the '70s. 'We moved up to Portland just as the Los Angeles Free Music Society came out of the closet. There was the whole punk scene and a rebirth of things, but when we left, it was the deadest, worst time to be there unless you were into glam.' This disgust is reflected in the tone of the early classics Pigface Chant, Flash Cards, Disco Diarrhea and Glamour Girl 1941. The crown jewel, perhaps, of the early Smegma dawn, is this, a solo Ju Suk Reet Meate joint, recorded in '78/'79 and pressed in a miniscule quantity in 1980, this is a recording that has been largely unavailable outside of certain collector circles. Even there, you better rub yr rabbits foot/save yr pennies.” This LP is packed in a handmade screened cover with stuff stuck on the front and additional details drawn on both sides -- each one totally unique. The LP title, artist's name (spelled here as “Ju Suk Reet Meet”) and copyright date are written on the jacket in magic marker, as are the details on the record labels themselves, Two inserts are tucked inside, and Ju Suk initialed the cover on the back (dating it 1986, interestingly enough). All in all, this is a genuine treasure for hardcore Smegma fans, a one-of-a-kind piece that you will hug to your bosom with a mother's love. The record shows mild wear, but looks fine and plays beautifully (if one may use such a word in reference to such ugly sounds), while the cover is only marred by a dented upper left-hand corner.
