First released in September 2000, Sailing To Philadelphia was Mark Knopfler's second solo outing after the long wind-down of Dire Straits. Cut in Nashville with producer Chuck Ainlay, it's a slick, literate album that trades guitar heroics for character studies and soft-shuffle arrangements. The title track draws from Thomas Pynchon's Mason & Dixon, while 'What It Is' became a fixture of his solo live sets. Guests include Van Morrison, James Taylor and both Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze, slotting in seamlessly beside Knopfler's signature fingerpicking and dry wit. A commercial high point for his solo catalogue, it topped charts in Germany, Norway, Switzerland and Italy, and went double platinum across Europe. This 14-track edition comes pressed on clear vinyl for the first time.
