In the mid 1960s, one of Missouri’s premiere soul and funk outfits debuted under the name, Fabulous Elites. This 11-piece group recorded at the legendary Damon studios, and included the four Bedell brothers who would later help form the Kansas City Express.
In a predominately white area where country music was the radio standard, the Kansas City Express literally broke the mold. While only one member was actually from Kansas City, the group stuck with its name, taking Springfield by storm.
Recorded at American Artists Studios, the band’s first 45, This is The Place, became a local hit in the Springfield area. Joe Bedell composed the tune while sitting at home on a cool summer night, with the soothing sound of crickets filling the air. But it was really Bedell’s wife, Deloris, who brought it to life with shining vocal arrangements that still touch people to this day. It was even used in a local shoe store commercial, sparking more than a little regional interest.
The Express had the time of their lives, touring all over the Midwest with a repertoire of originals as well as top-40 songs. Their showmanship even caught the eye of a local friend who had ties to Stax records. The legendary label was impressed enough to sign the Express, but the relationship was not to be. In an unfortunate twist of fate, Stax disbanded just four months after the Express became one of the last groups it ever signed.
The Kansas City Express still resonates with people in the Missouri area and beyond. Like all timeless art, This is the Place stands as one of the finest soul ballads to ever hit wax.
