This beautiful LP from Deutsche Gramophone (413 589-1, German pressing, DDD stereo) features Herbert von Karajan's final recorded versions of Claude Debussy's La Mer and the Prélude à l'Après-midi d'un Faune, as well as of Ravel's Pavane pour une Infante Défunte and Daphnis et Chloé – 2e série, all taped in the Philharmonie, Berlin in December 1985.

The advent of digital recording was the impetus for Karajan to re-make significant portions of his discography using the new technology, albeit with mixed results, both in terms of sound and performance. While there were several highpoints (Nielsen's 4th, Bruckner's 8th, Mahler's 9th, Haydn's Creation, Holst's The Planets), there were also numerous projects that arguably fell a bit short, such as his Beethoven Symphony cycle. These Debussy and Ravel re-makes happily fall into the former category. While Karajan's 80s LPs are not uncommon, this issue remains among the more scare of his digital titles.

Incidentally, the striking cover photo is credited to Schapowalow / Ligges. There are superb liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket in German (by Michael Stegemann), English and Italian (by Paul Griffiths), and in French (by Myriam Chimènes. The head of production for this album was Günther Breest, the recording supervisor Michael Glotz, and the balance engineer Günter Hermanns.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is some general wear to the jacket, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, bends, or other defects and the album remains extremely solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, a very good collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
