I am in the process of selling my vinyl collection.  The majority were purchased between 1972 and 1980.  Albums are graded visually. I have tried to do this honestly and conservatively using the seven point Record Collector Magazine Scale - M/NM/Ex/VG/G/F/P [Ex (UK) = VG+ (USA)].

King Crimson – In the Court of the Crimson King

For sale is an early UK release on Island records with the solid pink “i" label. Purchased new by myself around 1969 this is an early issue. Island ILPS 9111, Matrix Nos. 9111 A#3 and B#3.  From the Matrix numbers and the date of purchase I believe this to be a very early pressing.

In the Court of the Crimson King is the 1969 debut album by the British progressive rock group King Crimson. The album reached #5 on the British charts, and is certified gold in the United States.

The album is generally viewed as one of the strongest of the progressive rock genre, where King Crimson largely stripped away the blues-based foundations of rock music and mixed together jazz and classical symphonic elements. In his 1997 book Rocking the Classics, critic and musicologist Edward Macan notes that In the Court of the Crimson King "may be the most influential progressive rock album ever released". In the Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock, the album came #4 in its list of "40 Cosmic Rock Albums". The album was named as one of Classic Rock magazine's "50 Albums That Built Prog Rock".

The album was remastered and re-released on vinyl and CD several times during the 1980s and 1990s. All of these versions were based on tape copies that were several generations removed from the originals. The copy for sale here is a genuine early pressing based on the original tapes.

·        Disc: VG/Ex. The vinyl still looks shiny and in nice condition. There are a number of minor scuffs and hairline scratches which mean that I cannot grade it Ex but which should not significantly affect playback. Pink “i” Island label is pretty clean with only slight spindle marking.

·        Cover: Ex/VG. Gatefold cover has no splits or tears. The edges show significant scuffing but front and back cover is free of signicant scuffing or ring marking. Inside Gatefold is very clean. There are some very minor dirty marks and my name is written in ink on front.

·        Sleeve: VG/Ex. Inner paper sleeve with polythene liner and record care instructions printed on one side. No splits, creases or tears but downgraded due to some dirty marks and yellowing.

Note added 15th June:

As I now realize that this item is likely to attract interest from collectors who have exacting standards and to ensure that I have graded as conservatively as possible I would like to add to the grading of the disc. I have also uploaded three more pictures.

•  Disc: VG. The vinyl still looks generally shiny and in nice condition. There are a number of minor scuffs and several light scratches which mean that I must grade it VG. It should still play well with minimal noise. Pink “i” Island label is pretty clean but mild spindle marking. See additional photos for close-ups
