King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard are back – having never really left – with their most propulsive and engaging record to date. The band have fallen into a staggeringly prolific record release pattern since releasing their debut 12 Bar Bruise in 2012, putting out another four LPs including the concept album Eyes Like The Sky and Oddments, which also came out this year. Word is there’s another album already recorded and set for release next year.
2013’s Float Along… opened with the 16-minute beast ‘Head On/Pill’, and once again the band have frontloaded I’m In Your Mind Fuzz’s tracklist with an epic jam. Only this time, it’s been split into several parts: ‘I’m (Not) In Your Mind (Fuzz)’ and the album’s lead single ‘Cellophane’. It contrasts nicely with what they achieved on ‘Head On/Pill’, which seemed to ebb and flow much more freely with a less rigid song structure. The songwriting this time around also does the band’s two-drummer setup a whole lot more justice. It’s all very krauty, very hypnotic.
The first 25 minutes of this record whooshes past like a freight train, with a standout in the form of centrepiece ‘Am I In Heaven?’. This track opens with 45 seconds of tape-warped acoustic guitar, before bursting into the record’s triumphant melodic refrain at breakneck speed. It’s one of the most compelling things they’ve put to tape thus far and they slay it live. The record closes with yet another highlight in ‘Her & I’, which has been a staple in their set for about a year now. If you like your home furnished with paintings of Looney Tunes as interpreted by an un-dead Carl Sagan on peyote, look no further.
