This handsome LP – very rare in an ED1 blue/white stereo pressing – from Eterna (825 191, German pressing, blue/white stereo label) features conductor Franz Konwitschny and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra’s magnificent accounts of Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major Op. 97 “Rhenish” and the Overture, Scherzo and Finale Op. 52.

Both works were warmly recorded in the rich acoustics of the Kongresshalle, Leipzig, in August 1960 and can be spoken of in the same breath as the Schumann recordings by Sawallisch, Karajan, Szell, and Bernstein. This is exalted conducting (and playing) by any measure and all those who love these works will find much to treasure here – landmarks in the Schmann discography.

There are informative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Gerhard Schumann, provided in German only. The lovely cover art reproduces a detail from Caspar David Freidrich’s “Ausblick ins Elbtal”.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is GOOD. There is visible ringwear, aging, edgewear (more so at corners), and shelfwear. However, there are no bends, seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, still a good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD. Though there is light surface noise throughout, in general the playback remains excellent. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
