This beautiful LP – a fine collector’s copy – from Epic (LC 3143, US pressing, yellow radial label, mono – no stereo edition exists, hard inner sleeve) pairs two brilliant Paganini Concerto recordings from the Philips catalog in a glossy front laminate jacket with a hard inner sleeve – almost like a double-jacket.

Side 1 features Arthur Grumiaux's stunning account of Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 4 in D minor, recorded in Paris in November 1954 with conductor Franco Gallini and the Orchestra des Concerts Lamoureux. In this recording, Grumiaux plays the 1715 'Titian' Stradivarius, and this account with Gallini was made a few days after the original Second Paris Premiere, which occurred on Sunday, 7 November 1954 at the Salle Pleyel, Paris. Grumiaux is both firebrand and poet here.

Side 2 features Herman Krebbers’ dazzling performance of Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major Op. 6, recorded in the Grosser Saal of the Musikverein, Vienna, on 26 March 1954, with Willem van Otterloo conducting the Hague Phiilharmonic Orchestra. The Concertgebouw Orchestra’s Concertmaster was a magnificent solo artist in his own right and plays here with supreme technical command and lyric beauty.

Incidentally, on the front panel of the jacket, in addition to the portrait of Paganini by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, one see photos of two sculptures – the caption provided by Epic reads “Paganini and Berlioz, drawn from satirical sculptures by Jean Pierre Dantan (1800-1869), who created a highly original genre of plastic caricature. He fixed Paganini in a characteristic concert stance, one hip thrown out, his long hands ‘fluttering like a cloth in the wind at the end of a stick...his eagle eyes rolling in their sockets....”

This particular Epic album came with a hard, jacket-like, inner sleeve, with further illustrations and a re-printing of Berlioz’s impressions of Paganini. On the rear of the outer jacket are printed insightful liner notes by Fred Grunfeld, as well as photos of conductor Franco Gallini and violinist Arthur Grumiaux.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is light wear and discoloration along the edges, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and very striking in appearance – overall, a fine collector's copy.

The condition of the hard inner sleeve is near-MINT. Really, no flaws to speak of – a fine copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not completely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), this is a fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP – this is a lovely collector's copy.
