Brahms: Symphony No. 1 in C Minor
(Decca SXL 2013 UK LP 1958)
Firstly, there is a very small scratch on the 2nd track on Side 1. This causes one very small jump on my system. There are a few mild clicks in a couple of other places on this track too. Otherwise, plays well overall. Please see below for a more thorough description.
This is a UK original ED1 Stereo LP pressing. It has a fully laminated flipback sleeve. This has an extremely thin spine. The "spine" text is on the rear sleeve next to the spine. The top & bottom flipback have a die-cut rounded area at the centre. There is a printers date on the bottom flipback (R.S. 8.58). This means that this sleeve was printed in August 1958. It comes with its original company "FFSS" polythene-lined inner sleeve.
The record is pressed on thick vinyl & has ED1 Decca labels. These have the "Original Recordings By" text on them. The labels are grooved also. The record has 1st press ZAL-3787-1K and ZAL-3788-1K matrix stampers.
Sleeve: There is some mild or moderate rubbing wear to the corner tips. There is a very small piece of clear tape at the top & bottom corner tips at the sleeve opening. This hardly really notices. There is some light, mild or more moderate rubbing wear at the sleeve opening edges. There is some light, mild or very mild ringwear too. VG condition
Vinyl: There are 3 separate very small hairline marks (each measure 0.5 cm) that go around the groove in three separate places on the 2nd track on Side 1. They can't really be seen under a strong light. However, they can be seen when viewed through a magnifying glass. The 1st hairline mark causes about 7 mild clicks. The 2nd hairline mark causes one small jump on my system. There are a very few mild clicks too. The 3rd hairline mark causes about 7 mild clicks. It's a shame, because otherwise it's a clean copy.
Visually the vinyl looks in Near Excellent condition. There are light, very mild or very minor sleeve rubs on a few areas. These can only be seen under a strong light. However, because of the 3 small hairline marks - one which causes a small jump - I will only grade the vinyl as Fair+ condition. The labels are in Excellent+ condition & show minimal spindle wear only. The company inner sleeve is in VG condition. There is some light, mild or more moderate ringwear, fading & creasing. There are no seam splits.
I have fully play tested this LP. I have already mentioned the few playing faults on the 2nd track on Side 1. In short, there is one small jump and some mild clicks too. Otherwise, the LP plays VG+ to Near Excellent overall. There is some light, very mild or very minor crackle in some quieter places. There are 3 mild clicks near the start of Side 2. There are a couple of light clicks further on too.
