Janis Rainis, Janis Pliekšans by real name, was born on September 11, 1865 in Varslavani homestead of Dunava parish, in the family of tenants of several houses Krišjanis and Darta Pliekšani. Rainis’ childhood passed in semi-manor estates of Tadenava, Randene, Berkenele, Vasilova, and Jasmuiža. His childhood observations and memories are collected in his autobiographical epic ‘Years of Sun’ (Saules gadi, 1925).  Aged eight or nine, as a boarding student, Rainis studied with parson Oskars Svensons from Vilkumiests, nicknamed Egypt, and from August 1875 till December 1879 – in Griva German School. Sent to the boarding house of gamekeeper Freibergs, Rainis wrote his first poem ‘The Tiny Feather’. In January 1880, Rainis entered the Classics Department of Riga City Gymnasium, which proved to be a period when he particularly intensely corresponded with his family (letters are assembled in Volume XIX of his Collected Writings, 1984), and, from August that year, he boarded, paired with Leons Daraškevics, with the publisher of newspaper ‘Baltijas Vestnesis’ Bernhards Dirikis.

Rainis "Blow the Wind!" (1913)

"Blow wind!" is one of Rainis' favorite and most popular plays. It was written in 1913 in Castanola, Switzerland. The impetus to start a new play came in the autumn of 1912, when Rainis from St. Petersburg received an invitation from the St. Petersburg Latvian Charity Society to write a play for the Society's 35th anniversary. This gives him the opportunity to express "all the longings of his cramped homeland." Songs "Blow, Wind!" the text sketches Ulda's image, but the soft tune reveals Baiba's timid soul.

The main source of inspiration for the work is Latvian folk songs. Rainis emphasizes this by giving the work the title of the genre “Folk song”. Krišjanis Barons and Henry Visendorf's Latvian Songs and Aaron Matisse's Selection Our Folk Songs were used for the studies. Rainis notes songs about the beauty of a daughter of a nation, singing, mourning, grinding and grinding, the Daugava, gaining a wife by power and deceit, a groom drinker and a bridegroom who dreads a drunken boy into the river. The play includes fragments and paraphrases of folk songs, and uses imaginative folksongs and panthers. In the system of images one can see the features of a folk songbaby, mother's daughter, son of a people, mother of daughters and mistress. The storyline consists of the arrival of marriages in a farmyard where two mother's daughters and a mistress live.

Rainis, however, does not obey the form of folk song, but varies it according to his artistic intentions. Heroes are perceived as real people operating in a real environment. The images are very different from the use of folklore.
