Description

LED ZEPPELIN II A2 / B2 Atlantic 58818 UK 1969 Red/Plum LABEL
This rare second pressing on the red/plum label has 'The Lemon Song' credit on the label as well as on the cover of course.  This is before later pressings replaced it with 'The Killing Floor' on the label and for this reason this pressing is highly collectible.  The audio on this pressing is of a very high quality so will no doubt appeal to the avid collectors out there :-)
The gatefold and label has 'Livin' Lovin' Maid' on the credits.
The record has the Jimmy Page production credit on both the label and gatefold and Peter Grant as the Executive Producer on the gatefold only.

The audio is Ex+ (although Near Mint in many sections)
The gatefold cover is VG+
The labels are Ex+
The original inner sleeve is Ex
Visual grading
This vinyl still has a lovely glossy sheen despite being played a number of times.  Yes there is some spindle wear but the previous owner obviously looked after the vinyl very well as the audio has to be heard to be believed.  Under a bright light you can detect various fine hairlines and a couple of minor scratches but they have no adverse affect on the sound quality as described below.  It is a superb listen truth be told.
Play grading
The classic 'Whole Lotta Love' has no lead in static.  How many second pressings can claim that?!  The track then proceeds to play with stunning audio and only the merest hint of static here and there.  This was an absolute joy to listen to!  The clarity and strength of the bass really come to the fore here and rarely have I heard better.  Wow!!  The quiet intro to 'What is and What Should Never Be' has no interference and just sounds immaculate.  The remainder of the track plays with the same quality, just a handful of very light static sounds but nothing that is intrusive and the quiet sections again play beautifully.  'The Lemon Song' follows the pattern in that it plays with great clarity and no background noise.  The middle bass section plays so cleanly and with such power it is hard to believe this vinyl is from 1969.  'Thank You' ends Side One with superb audio, there's no other way to describe it.  There is perhaps a touch of minor distortion here and there but in all honesty for a vinyl approaching 50 years old to find audio as good as this on an A2/B2 pressing is such a rarity.  There is very minor intermittent static on this classic track but again the audio is stunning and the quiet ending just plays with superlative audio.
'Heart Breaker' here plays with astonishing audio and it would be difficult to find better on a red/plum label.  Again there is no lead in static and once more the depth and resonance of the sound is immense.  The bass again shines through.  It plays so loud and with such clear sound it is a quality listen.  'Livin' Lovin Maid' is as near to Mint as is possible and 'Ramble On' more than equals that high level.  'Moby Dick' plays in exceptional style and the drum solo is just incredible!  It has no interference whatsoever!  'Bring It On Home' end the LP in classic style with, yes you guessed it, wonderful sound with only a touch of distortion perhaps.
The more I listen to this vinyl the more it impresses me.  I have never heard an A2/B2 pressing as good as this.  There are no clicks or pops and that is just such an incredible rarity.  Perhaps the odd static sound here and there and but you hear that on new vinyl!  There is no crackle across either side and this is quite possibly the best red/plum version I have heard and to think it's an A2/B2 'Lemon Song' credit vinyl, what a great find!
Gatefold cover
The light brown E.J. Day gatefold is in very good condition but does have some shelf wear which is a shame when you consider the quality of the vinyl.  There is plenty of rubbing to the edges and some wear to the spine.  There is actually some transparent tape that runs down the length of the spine.  There is some fading to the front and back cover and some ringwear to the latter also.  Whilst the vinyl has been superbly well looked after I can only imagine the gatefold has become worn through various house moves perhaps.  It would certainly help if it was swapped with a cleaner gatefold from the same era so as to match the quality of the audio.  However, if the true audiophile is after an outstanding A2/B2 pressing then this is the one to own!  It is worth mentioning that the inside of the gatefold is extremely clean and there are no marks or writing anywhere on this gatefold.
Inner sleeve
This includes the original Polydor poly-lined sleeve and is in excellent condition with no splits to the sides just some light creasing and minor age related marking.
The Labels
They are both very clean with some spindle wear and light marking that can only be seen under a certain light.  There is no writing however.
