Trojan Box Set: Rastafari Various Artists Release Date Oct 17, 2000 Label Trojan Review by Rick Anderson Given the predominance of Rastafarian themes during reggae's golden era in the 1970s, it's easy to forget that the Rasta themes of spiritual uplift and social rebellion came to the fore relatively late in that music's development. Reggae started out as ska, a galloping party music that was characterized by songs primarily devoted to the joy of romance and the pleasures of the dance. But when Rastafarianism hit, it hit hard; by the mid-'70s the music and the religion were all but inseparable in the eyes of the general public. This fine three-disc box set provides a very serviceable overview of that period, featuring tracks by such famous roots-and-culture artists as Barrington Levy ("A Yah We Deh," "Revelation"), Don Carlos ("Back Weh With Your Mix Up," Praise Jah With Love and Affection), and the great Johnnie Clarke ("Praise the Name of Jah"). The Trojan catalog being what it is, there are some fine obscurities here as well, including Anthony Johnson's "Dread Locks" and several impressive tracks by the little-known singer Pancho Alphonso.
