I will never compromise on quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes that offer virtually no protection at all, and records WILL arrive damaged in them at some time as most record buyers will already know. Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT send any item, no matter what its value without a Royal Mail or courier tracking number. ALL my items must be signed and trackable to comply with Ebay delivery rules. Please do NOT ask me to make any exceptions to this rule as no country offers 100% reliable service without it.

Label/Format: Swan Song – Beautiful designed original examples with ‘Made in UK’ text. This copy a FULL UK pressing, many versions sold in the UK were foreign pressings made for our market. These labels have matt surfaces with a gentle hint of texturing. There are no WB logos on this first pressed example that have the distinctive CBS pressed ring ridges.

Label Conditions: All four are fresh, clean and highly attractive with deep, rich colour and any spindle marks (or traces) very gentle and faint. Both records sound great and were a joy to play-grade.

Country of Manufacture: England, that is every part. So many of these were pressed in Germany and the early full English pressings are less common. This pair also very well pressed with sound to match.

Rarity & Info: The title itself is hardly scarce but very early pressed UK copies are harder. A high percentage of this landmark classic are found pressed and made in Germany for the UK market. The cover is always immensely difficult to find in better conditions. With 41 die-cut windows, the surfaces are delicate and fragile, many are seen badly damaged with tatty, feathered and burr window edges – or even torn. The edges always seem to fair worst, most are seen badly scuffed and rubbed, bashed or badly out-of-shape. Apart from a very small surface scuff on the top of the back (look hard), this cover has little else to fault and was protected with a plastic sleeve by the one owner from new. Sound quality always is the main factor for most, and these four sides did not disappoint. Overall, this pair amongst the cleanest pressings I have heard.

Brief Info: A monumental landmark double set from the mighty Led Zeppelin and containing a vast array of varied music, some of which must rate as their strongest ever. Issued nearly two years after Houses of the Holy, this album topped both the UK and American album charts and was their sixth release. Such was the astonishing strength of this album – their first issue on their own new Swan Song label – their entire back catalogue again re-entered the top 200 album charts simultaneously, a feat to that date never to have happened before. With over 80 minutes of powerhouse blues rock and some superb acoustic numbers, this awesome set has it all and this copy does it very fine justice with both records playing impressively with the packaging in very fine condition as well. The only blemish – made for what were the best of intentions – the owner put a single piece of clear tape on each inner on the opposite edge to the open as a prevention for splitting. There is no evidence at all these inners were ever split and he simply wanted to keep them that way. The tape is still present and given the dark surfaces has less visual impact.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better for such a wear-prone and fragile cover. A UK-made example with all the appropriate text that reads: “SWAN SONG / 484 KINGS ROAD, LONDON SW10 - Cullderstead Ltd., trading as Swan Song - A Swan Song/Atlantic recording distributed by WEA Records Ltd. P & © 1975”. Surfaces are matt and smooth and has 41 die-cut windows. Includes the two UK card inner sleeves with correct first issue details and the gatefold ‘white window’ insert sheet, also with original text matter.

Cover Front: Firstly, I always check the windows – all are crisp and sharp with no burring, thickening, splits or damage. The cutting very crisp and neat with any traces of thinned card residue minimal to barely any. These windows are up there with the finest I have seen. The rest of the front is largely the same, any marks, rubbing, creasing (a couple of gentle ones on the bottom edge) or blemishes, very few and faint with no sticker issues.

Cover Back: Being darker than the front any minor blemishes or rubbing will show more, but little on view here bar the aforementioned small surface scuff on the top edge. Then this is practically the same as the front.

Top Edge: This is the entrance edge and hugely vulnerable and rarely seen totally sharp or unsoftened by usage. This has gentle thickening and mild patchy burring, but is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way – as indeed is the entire cover. Given the facts however, these perilous areas have fared quite well and has no tears or splits.

Bottom Edge: Wide and thick to hold the content weight, this also totally uncrushed retaining its boxy shape. The lack of rubbing to this is close to remarkable and rarely ever seen, there is barely a trace. This vulnerable edge possibly the very best I have seen to date.

Left (Spine) & Right Edges: Superb with barely any wear again and still solidly erect and uncrushed. The text is immaculate and still a very deep red. Red ink very prone to light exposure, often going pale, even pink or fading away totally, this still easy to read and little short of as-made. Like the perilous bottom edge, this is one of the very best spines I have seen as well. The right edge is virtually the same, it never included text, the flow-around graphic still superb.

Corners: Unusually impressive as well with any traces of rubbing tiny, little and faint. Excellent shape with no knocks is retained.

Cover Summary: With the ‘biggest’ blemish being a very small scuff to the rear top opening, overall this is one of the very best Physical Graffiti covers I have seen to date. The general lack of wear, no damage to the delicate window structures and impressive freshness means it should please many, and maybe even most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT: but in terms of lack of wear, I could easily add a couple of pluses, but there is a neat strip of clear tape to each fold opposite the openings. So I think an excellent grading is probably harsh and purely subjective, the one original owner did this for the best of intentions, to protect the edge he considered most at risk of splitting. This is neat and still firmly attached, and being honest, it bothered me little. This apart, both inners are very impressive with the edges fully intact. Any rubbing to the edges is little, mainly light and patchy with most having little at all. Both have the correct SSK 89400/A and /B numbers with straight side entrances that have barely thickened at all. Both clean, fresh and attractive with barely any creasing. One side is dark, the other lighter, so different effects can be utilised as seen though the main covers various windows. These card inners were never lined, hence vulnerable to splits as movement is more rife on this unique style of cover. Even with the neat single edge tape, a very fine looking pair.

The Folded ‘Slip’ Insert: NEAR MINT: clean, fresh with no ‘set-off’ from the inners which happens all too frequenly on this unless kept away from those dark surfaces. No creasing, barely a trace of edge thickening or toning, this has hardly aged and includes all the details as per the main cover. The plain card back side has no writing with any hint of darkening minimal. All corners crisp with with no knocks or dinks, the main surfaces barely even blemishes. This has been folded very close to square as well – I have seen several severely misaligned – the small details that make the difference. The credit details to confirm: “Gothic Print Finishers Ltd., London SE9 2EQ”. Also with the “Swan Song SSK 89400” catalogue number and address “SWAN SONG, 484 KINGS ROAD, LONDON SW10”.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a fine visual pair that are clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, fine, quite wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, few even register. These hard card inners are never surface friendly and few copies of this album will avoid some fine surface marks at best. Visually fine records that play very impressively, they should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This legendary double album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this pair very well pressed with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises – that often not the case. Mass-produced albums more often had pressing issues, faults and unwanted rasps or crackles with this pair have avoided. With a few quiet passages, the odd contact trace is near unavoidable over four sides. Few available copies will outperform these early original UK records significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain these records have been played only quite lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic album. It could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
