Rarity & Info: Moderate, this album sold very well. Condition of all parts is always the crucial factor. Many copies are seen scratched and heavily played. The fragile multi-die-cut window cover seldom seen without damage and considerable wear. Inners splits and rubbed. This German-pressed copy is in fantastic condition and hardly played. All elements of the set in clean unaged conditions and the records play superbly throughout. Pressed to the highest standards and exceeding many UK copies I have heard. For those who want beautiful clean audio and a lovely clean cover, this delivers exactly that, and they are far less common.

Brief Info: A monumental landmark double set, the sixth album from the mighty Led Zeppelin and containing a vast array of varied music some of which must rate as their strongest ever. Issued nearly two years after Houses of the Holy this album topped both the UK and US album charts. Such was the astonishing strength of this album – their first issue on their own new Swan Song label – their entire back catalogue again re-entered the top 200 album charts simultaneously, a feat to date never to have happened before. With over 80 minutes of powerhouse blues rock and some superb acoustic numbers, this awesome set has it all and this beautifully pressed German copy does it supreme justice.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with 41 die-cut windows, the surfaces are matt and smooth. Manufactured in Germany. Includes the two graphic window filling thick paper inner sleeves and the gatefold ‘white window’ insert sheet.

Cover Front & Back: Both sides are superb with no damage to the 41 windows, any burring minimal and minor, hardly any traces at all. Any rubbing to the surfaces minuscules, this is ultra clean and fresh with no creasing. The colour dark and unfaded, both sides simply look fantastic. There is an embossed ‘W’ Warner logo on the back near the left bottom corner.

Top Edge: This is the entrance edge and hugely vulnerable and rarely seen totally sharp or unsoftened by usage. Any thickening on this one light and patchy on the front, I have rarely, if ever seen a much neater one.

Bottom Edge: Again an immensely perilous storage edge, but this has survived in very fine condition with only a gentle rub on the front fold on the right side, its very fine and light, all else is again superb. It has also retained its boxy shape with no compression or crushing, that is somewhat unusual as well.

Right Edge & Left (Spine): The right edge is immaculate, uncrushed again and unrubbed. The spine edge opposite is the same with all text pristine. Red spine text has a tendancy to fade or lighten, even going pink, this being deep red and looking fresh and stunning.

Corners: All corners retain superb shape with no knocks or dinks. Any tip rubbing tiny and light and mostly avoided altogether.

Cover Summary: With such little wear to this most uncompromising and delicate cover, it’s a pleasure in offering this fantastic German-manufactured example – the same goes for all other elements of the set. This hugely attractive famous cover will prove hard to find better and should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: Both MINT: a variant to the usual hard card inners, these are more like thick paper, softer and less rigid. These also can fill in the main cover’s window cut-outs. Both as-made with no creasing, rubbing or edge splits, these were not lined.

The Folded ‘Slip’ Insert: PRACTICALLY MINT: clean, fresh with no ‘set-off’ from the inners which happens all too frequently on this unless kept away from those dark surfaces. No creasing, edge thickening or toning, this has not aged at all. This again is a thick paper variant.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): both very clean with superb shine and freshness, this pair without doubt hardly played. Four gorgeous labels and sound quality is immense. Any surface marks are very fine and light as seen under bright light. There are no penetrating stylus scratches, just fine hairlines that this album rarely seems to escape. Beautifully pressed in Germany for the European market and one of the cleanest all-round examples for sound I have heard for some time. This pair should again please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play superbly well and even exceed their visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Powerful, distortion-free sound with amazing sonic delivery of the music that the original analogue format offers. Heavy rock albums always sound better via vinyl with the depth, power and full dynamic range it offers. These the cleanest pressed pair I have heard for a considerable time. Any surface sound barely even registered and there are no pressing problems, unwanted noises or tracking issues*. All frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range, ultimate fine detail and delivery. This was a joy and gave a true sense of awe, the power of Bonham’s percussion has to be heard from the vinyl source. Few available copies, no matter where they are pressed will match or better little used set. With great sound and a lovely clean cover and contents, this classic Led Zeppelin double set should please many, if not most collectors and is strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
