Lee Dorsey was - and still is, some 30+ years after his death - an uncrowned king of the New Orleans Rhythm & Blues. Wildly popular in and outside his native town, and influential in Europe beyond his US popularity, he placed a string of high-charting, crafty singles on top lists in the early-to-mid 1960's when his popularity started to wane. His simple, unadorned voice was a perfect icing on a cake of those complex, syncopated cajun-styled structures provided courtesy of Allen Toussaint (a/k/a Naomi Neville, as he is credited on some of his records) and his orchestra. This album, one of only two albums he recorded for "Amy" label at the very peak of his career, in 1965, is a chockfull of goodies. It includes two of his greatest hits ("Ride your Pony" and "Get out of my life,woman") as well as some new hits, such as "Can you hear me", our favorite Lee Dorsey song. The record, as you will see from the description, is a joy to listen and look at, and the gorgeous, punchy mono sound leaves absolutely nothing to be desired. This is how 60's soul should be listened!
