Description
You are bidding on an INCREDIBLY RARE famous Lord Power 10" 78rpm single on Duke Reid's Trojan label CATALOGUE # XX02 - Penny Reel b/w: Chambolina ... released in 1958 or 1959. It is said to be the first ever release on this label and the first record produced by Duke Reid, who named his new label and his sound system after his nickname The Trojan. The Record is in VG++ to excellent condition, Nice glossy sheen, few very minor scuffs, about as good a copy as could hope to find of this RARE piece of musical history, that you will be unlikely to find ever again. These early recordings were very limited pressings and not made for resale so much as Kingston Jamaica Sound System Battles in the days of the "dance hall crashers" etc. where the DJ's would often scratch off the names of the records so other DJ's could not find them. This is golden age mento at it's best.. and the seeds of Roots Reggae in it's purest form.
Penny Reel is a wild and rollicking track (as was usually the case with Lord Power), set apart by the use of electric guitar. Covered by many ska & reggae artist over the years this song provided the best ska cover of a mento song, when in his finest hour Eric 'Monty' Morris recorded it for Treasure Isle in 1964 with the Skatalites backing him. Please check my other auctions for another rare Mento gem on the IVAN CHIN'S label.
For info on Jamaican Mento... (from which ska & reggae emerged) check out www.mentomusic.com this great site which I have nothing to do with except their are photos of my other rare mento 78 that is on ebay now .... Another great source Dan Neely's site http://homepages.nyu.edu/~dtn9606/mento.html these people have engrossed themselves in the study and recent rediscovery of the history of mento especially the 1950's golden age.
