LOUISIANA MUSIC Vinyl Six Pack Mardi Gras Indians, Swamp Pop, & TWO 7" Singles

Louisiana is known for its food, and its music. I've been all over the country, and the world, and there are many places that their music and food are amazing, but Louisiana wins first place for both! We have hurricanes, extreme summertime heat and humidity, a killer Mardi Gras season, and we have crazy accents, but for food and music, you just can't beat south Louisiana, and especially the New Orleans area!

Today we feature a sweet bundle of awesome Louisiana artists, and we shine a bright spotlight on the Mardi Gras Indians! What, or who, are the Mardi Gras Indians, you might ask? I found the following tidbits online:

"Mardi Gras Indians are secretive because only certain people participated in masking--people with questionable character. In the old days, the Indians were violent. Indians would meet on Mardi Gras; it was a day to settle scores." - Larry Bannock, Past President, New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian Council

"Mardi Gras is full of secrets, and the Mardi Gras Indians are as much a part of that secrecy as any other carnival organization. Their parade dates, times and routes are never published in advance, although they do tend to gather in the same areas every year."

Now I've attended a few Mardi Gras Indian parades during the Mardi Gras season in New Orleans, and it was always a blast. The costumes are eye-popping and jaw-dropping, and they work on them all year long! It's just people having fun, and carrying on a tradition that started over a century ago...

In 2018, Mardi Gras Records in Metairie, LA released a double album set titled 'Mardi Gras Indians', a compilation of tracks from various New Orleans artists. The two record set is on colored vinyl. I tried to find a pic of the records, but could not find even one. I did attach a small info pic about the colors that they use to make the colored vinyl LPs. This set features artists such as the Wild Magnolias (one of the first Mardi Gras Indian music bands to be recorded), the Flaming Arrows, and the Hundred & One Runners. And a lot of the songs are well known NOLA classics like "Hey Pocky Way" and "Big Chief". And the best part? This bad boy is STILL SEALED and NEVER OPENED or PLAYED, and it comes with great cover artwork!

Next we have a band called the Golden Eagles, featuring the always awesome Monk Boudreaux. I've been lucky enough to watch Monk perform several times through the years, as well as actually meet him. This album, titled 'Lightning and Thunder' is from 1988. The vinyl itself looks really good, with only a few light surface marks on both sides. Nothing bad, and no scratches, gouges, or scuffs. Jacket still has its original shrinkwrap on it, and looks fantastic!

Next up we have Cajun musician Zachary Richard (pronounced ree-shard), and his 1989 Mardi Gras themed album titled 'Mardi Gras Mambo'! It features several New Orleans Carnival songs that are timeless classics like the title track, "Iko Iko", and the always popular "Big Chief". Richard also adds a few original songs, and the result is really fun and festive! The vinyl itself looks new, and is shiny and clean. Jacket has some shelf-wear, mainly on the spine and corners, but overall in really good shape.

We'll end with another compilation, and this time it gets even more diverse, and more Cajun! Titled 'Cajun and Swamp Pop Super Hits', it's TWELVE hit songs with various artists that is both NOLA musicians, as well as southwest Louisiana artists. People like Beausoleil with Micheal Doucet, Fats Domino with Doug Kershaw, Rockin' Sidney, and Cypress City, among others. Released in 1988 by Jin Records, in Ville Platte, LA. The vinyl looks really good, with only a few very light surface marks on both sides. Nothing bad, and no scratches, gouges, or scuffs. The heavy and thick cardboard jacket looks fantastic!

And I'll end with TWO 7" singles, in their original picture sleeves! First up is The Dixie Cups. Those ladies first made the "Iko Iko" song a smash hit in the 60s, along with "Chapel of Love". The Dixie Cups were two sisters (Rosa Lee Hawkins and Barbara Ann Hawkins) and their cousin Joan Marie Johnson. Rosa Lee and Joan Marie have passed away, leaving Barbara Ann to carry on the legacy (which she has, with new members). The Dixie Cups are here with a special 7" EP that includes FOUR tracks, two on each side. And two are their biggest hits! The record looks okay, but has several light scratches on both sides. It looks like it was made in the UK. Picture sleeve is in pretty good condition, but with some wear. The sleeve is awesome, with a drawing of the original three Cups.

And we'll end with Professor Longhair! You'll get a sweet 7" picture sleeve single for his song "Rock 'N' Roll Gumbo" (my favorite kind of gumbo!), in a nice picture sleeve. Recorded FIFTY years ago, it's the title track of that album. In '85, they remixed it in Los Angeles, and it got re-released. And the track features Clarence"Gatemouth" Brown, another awesome (and Grammy winning) Louisiana artist, on guitar! The vinyl has a few light surface marks on both sides, but nothing too bad. No heavy scratches, gouges or scuffs. Sleeve has some wear, but still looking good, and still intact.
