-
A "Frankenstein" Album: "Magic Christian Music" is a mix of old and new material. It contains the three songs the band recorded for the film soundtrack The Magic Christian, including the hit single "Come and Get It." These tracks were interspersed with songs from the band's previous album as The Iveys, Maybe Tomorrow, which had only been released in limited markets.
-
The Paul McCartney Connection: The album's commercial success was driven by the single "Come and Get It," which was written, produced, and arranged by Paul McCartney. He gave the song to the band to help launch their career. The track, with its clean production and catchy melody, became a worldwide hit. McCartney also produced the song "Carry On Till Tomorrow," and George Martin arranged the strings for it.
-
Early Power Pop: "Magic Christian Music" is a foundational album for the power pop genre. It is characterized by its melodic songwriting, strong vocal harmonies (often compared to The Beatles), and a blend of upbeat rock numbers with more introspective ballads. The album showcases the talents of the band's main songwriters, Pete Ham and Tom Evans.
-
Legacy: The album effectively launched Badfinger's career, establishing them as a promising new act on Apple Records. While the album itself is a compilation, it contains some of the band's most enduring early work and remains a crucial piece of their discography. It set the stage for their subsequent, and more cohesive, albums like No Dice and Straight Up.
