Despite The endless debates OnThe one inThe top hat deserves that title, it is undeniable that he is as recognizableA public figure as anyone in KISS or Nickelback or anyofThe "commercial" rock bands. Many guitarists Know SLASHThe guy who has endless amountsof signature gear. With multiple signature Gibson guitars, signature Seymour-Duncan pickups, signature MXR / DunlopA signature Marshall amp, and more, it's hardTo goToA guitar shop and not seeHIS signature signal chain somewhere.
As A musician, many KnowThe one behindThe legendary (and oftentimes overplayed) guitar solos in Guns N 'Roses songs "Sweet ChildO 'Mine "and" November Rain "(my personal favorite isThe solo in "Nightrain"). Since HIS TimeThe lead axemanof Guns N 'Roses he has found fame inTwo more bands: Velvet Revolver (A GNR minus Axl Rose reunion) andHIS current, soloband , officially called SLASH with Myles Kennedy andThe Conspirators. Note I will refer To Theband hereafter asThe Conspirators.
" World On Fire " is TheSecond Album with their current lineupofSLASH , Myles Kennedy, Todd Kerns and Brent Fitz. Compared To their First AlbumLOVE , "this album isA logical, but not radical,Step forward. FOR One thing, The album is over seventy minutes LongLOVE "and unheardofFORA hard rock album inGENERAL .
Overall, " World On Fire " is better than "Apocalyptic LOVE ," just not in easily expressible terms. Comparing " World On Fire " ToLOVE "is like comparingTwo AC / DC albums - "HighwayToHell "is better than" Powerage, "it's just hardTo show how.
In terms of musical creativity, " World On FireTheSame as "ApocalypticLOVE "except thatSLASH overdubbed guitarsOn this album. In "30 Years To LIFEThe overdubs allowFOR some great harmonies. Not as prominent elsewhere, The overdubs are nevertheless used masterfully ToToThe songs when necessary. There are none that feel out of place.
In terms of form, TheTheSame as thoseOn "ApocalypticLOVE "(well,The acoustic / clean songs are refreshing). The riffs and guitar solos are much in The SameFrom "ApocalypticLOVE " as well. The real growth derives From TheThe Conspirators have attained asAband . FOR One, I Can actually hear Todd Kerns' bass On he meant itTo be heard. Brent Fitz, The drummer, more so than Kerns, opened up with this album. Although he says in interviews that he tries To be AToKnow which creative libertiesTo take and whenTo take them. No, there are no grandiose drum solos or anything that One would find out ofA certain levelof finesse,A certain feel that makesHIS drumming closeToPerfect . It just clicks.
That pretty much sums up this album: it just clicks. The more I listen To TheThe more I wantTo replay them. At First , it seems like TheOne relatively consistent barrageof hard rock, but overTime , their differences, their details growOn me. More so than "Apocalyptic LOVE ," I CanThe songs outof my head. I have "30 Years To LIFEFORThe past few days so much that I've actually learned howTo play it. "Avalon" has been starting To grow On me. One thing that is definite is that The album does not wear OnThe listener; there are seventeen songsof substance all worthLISTENING through. Heck, I'm even getting some DragonForce vibes From TheOverdrive . "While I guess there is no standout, altogether unique track, like" Anastasia "From "ApocalypticLOVE , ""World On Fire "is justA better album.
Aside From just TheofThe Conspirators getting tighter overTime ,The biggest factor inThe successof this album is Elvis Baskette's production. "Apocalyptic LOVE " sounded cold, biting, and harsh FromA production standpoint. While " World On Fire " is no silky smooth magic carpet ride, it is much better. Maybe it's just because SLASH allowed FOROn this album, butThe songs are so much more sonically complex (FromA production standpoint, notA musicalOne ) than those On "ApocalypticLOVE . "AtThe very least,The song intros are startingTo get interesting with more texture noises that dissipate afterA shortTime . Baskette's use of effects is spot OnThe phaser atThe beginof "Stone Blind" andThe flanger in "IrisofThe Storm "are stirring examples.
Lyrics: I've thought FOR Aof years now that Myles Kennedy hasThe best modern voice in hard rock. He hits all HIS notes with ease, in TheLiveIn Concert . On " World On Fire ," he never lets up. However, except FOR AHIS useofLong notes that modulate pitch ("wohhh ohh ohhhh" type melodies andThe sort), he hasn't changed at allFromThe last Conspirators album (or The last Alter Bridge albumFOR that matter). Kennedy's vocals are The only facet ofThe Conspirators that has not exhibited growthFromTheFirst AlbumToThe second.
Lyrically, Kennedy baffles me as he always does; HIS lyrics border Onof incredible substance yetA whole song never fully connects as well as it should or could. Moreover, On this album HISThe vibeofThe song. FOR example, "30 Years To LIFEA harrowing tale, but it doesn't seem fitFORThe thrilling, up beat rocker thatThe melodyofThe song suggests it is.
Regardless of my criticisms, Kennedy's performance, in Theof things is far above average. There is just less growth than I expected From such A great talent as him.
Overall Impression: In summary, " World On Fire " is an excellent album, AFOR albumofThe year givenThe notorietyof its conceivers. It evinces why The conspirators is OneofThe best hard rock bandsof today and whySLASH isSTILL considered by manyTo be On topofThe guitar world. This album Can seem repetitive at FirstA grower. Personally, "30 Years To LIFETo lakeThe value in all sixteen other tracks.
The flag of rock and roll STILLTo see it. I have always been quick To chastise those few.
