Description

Led Zeppelin "Untitled" IV ZOSO (1971) Vinyl LP [Atlantic SD 7208] Stereo
First Press Matrix Label Variant "RI" = Phillips Recording Corp. Richmond, IN The Label Rimtext of this version shows "MFG. BY ATLANTINC RECORDING CORP., 1841 BROADWAY, NEW YORK, N.Y." Gatefold sleeve. Side "A" written as "ONE", Side "B" written as "TWO". Lyrics insert printed on brown paper.

  • Matrix Label Side A: ST-A-712285RI
  • Matrix Label Side B: ST-A-712286RI
  • Matrix / Runout (Runout Side A, Variation): PECKO St-A-712285-DDD-1 AT/GP PR +1 D
  • Matrix / Runout (Runout Side B, Variation): ST-A-712286-FFF-1 PECKO DUCK AT/GP PR +1 D
      • Note to Matrix Runout: On both sides "G" in "GP" looks like an "S", "+1" is under the "PR" and the "D" is reversed to the "PR". The second and third repeated letter "D" and "F" are slight and do not exactly match the etching of the first, the subsequent "-1" is also slight.
The Matrix Label indicates this is a first pressing, both by the address and the "RI" in the Matrix.
There is no indication that this is the 1971 "Club Edition" or the "Pork Duck" version, both of which were produced at this plant. Beginning in 1974 the reissues list "Rockefeller Plaza" as the address on the Label Rimtext, and the 1977 reissue is cataloged "SD 19129" -- by process of elimination this does not appear to be a reissue.
I cannot find an exact match for the Runout Matrix on Discogs, but the site is not comprehensive since it is crowd sourced. The Runout Matrix is similar to "Variation 10" for this pressing (on Discogs) except it is missing the "-11" after "St-A712285-DDD-1" on Side A. The Matrix on Side B matches "Variation 10" except for the presence of the "+1" under the "PR" (which is also present on Side A, and not listed on Discogs). The "+1" may have been overlooked by the contributor since it is very slight.
The combination of the Side One 'D-series' and the Side Two 'F-series' appears unique to the Richmond Pressing (along with the order of the other indicators), and it does not seem like this is a re-labeled pressing. I have tried to find the same Runout Matrix combination(s) in other issues/pressings with no luck, including searches of just the Runout Matrix with permutations without the "+1", and with the "+1" as "1+" (a common variant); including permutations with and without the subsequent "DD-1" and "FF-1". I have not been able to return anything on Discogs or from google searching these permutations of the Runout Matrix etchings.
If you have any questions or information to contribute regarding this matter please feel free to contact me.
