Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Physical Graffiti was Led Zeppelin’s first release on the Swan Song label having been with Atlantic Records beforehand. It's gone multi-platinum and is featured on various 'greatest albums of all time' lists.
Just reissued for its 40th anniversary, here is an opportunity to own an extremely nice UK 1st pressing.
This was purchased at the time by my dad who found the music ‘too loud’. It has therefore been tucked away seemingly unplayed since.

Criteria for a first pressing:
- Box Cover: The outer cover is of a top loading ‘box’ construction of thick ridged card with the following text printed on the back, top centre: SWAN SONG / 484 KINGS ROAD, LONDON SW10 Cullderstead Ltd., trading as Swan Song A Swan Song/Atlantic recording distributed by WEA Records Ltd.
- The white inner wrap around sleeve is of thick matt card stock with a spine at its base and a grey interior. Later copies are glossy, printed on thinner card and have a white reverse side.
- The group name, record title and catalogue number run down the left hand side spine, printed in red.
- Inner Sleeves: The Inner sleeves are printed on thick card with a natural untreated grey finish to the inside surfaces. They have SSK 89400/A and SSK 89400/B respectively on the back (bottom right corner) of each of the inners. Later issues were thinner card with a smooth finish to the inside.
- Labels: The labels are the easiest identifying factors for an original UK 1st issue as they should be clearly marked "Made in UK" at 9 o’clock and do NOT have the small circular Warner Brothers Logo at the end of the bottom rim text. The WB logo was introduced onto the label in mid 1975 just a few months after the release, so any label with the WB logo is not from the very first batch of pressings.
- Matrix numbers: A1/B5/C1/D1 (there is B4 which can be considered to be marginally earlier in the pressing sequence)
Condition
Vinyl: To the naked eye all four sides appear virtually unmarked with just a few light hairline marks over the 4 sides. Both LPs retain the super glossy sheen you’d associate with a brand new record. Viewed under a halogen bulb a few very light surface marks are evident.
Labels: perfect; no evidence of spindle wear. Note SIde 1's label is a little off centre due to manufacturing.
Outer sleeve: Front board is pretty much perfect; bottom edge has some rubbing to it (supersize pic to see detail); the other two sides slight rubs to edges; reverse board has a couple of stress marks from bottom edge and the top lip has a little wear. Most importantly the die cut window all retain really sharp edges with NO snags or tears to them. Despite these minor defects, overall I’d rate it EX+ and imagine it’d still be hard to better.
Inner sleeves: both inners are near perfect, each with a single light stress mark on the reverse running outward from the edge. Disc A from the right edge above the top window; Disc B: from the top edge above the second window in from the right (the one witht eh stripper.) NO tears to edges from the LPs.
White Inner wrap-around sleeve (this sits inside the outer sleeve and houses the LPs) some mild signs of foxing. I have 3 copies of this LP and they all suffer from this, even the later type printed on thin glossy stock (I guess that what happens if you leave your windows open for 40 years.) Otherwise some very minimal wear to top edge.
