This remarkable and rare LP from Polydor · Vox (PL 6290, US pressing, black/silver label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features that wonderful Mozartian Lili Kraus in a magical rendtion of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor K. 466, recorded with conductor Enrique Jorda and the Pro Musica Orchestra (in fact, the Orchestre Lamoureux) at the Salle Pleyel, Paris, on 2 March 1950.
Filling out the disc are Kraus’s equally inspired accounts of Mozart’s Rondo in D Major K. 485 and the Minuet in D Major K. 355, both for solo piano, and both set down at the Salle Chopin, Paris, on 6 March 1950.
In all of these performances there is a wisdom and humanity here, allied to a spontaneity and sense of discovery, that remain captivating and evergreen fresh.
Incidentally, there are splendid liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by future New York Times Music Critic Harold C. Schonberg, printed in Engish only. The cover design is uncredited.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is edgewear, slight bumping at corners, and mild discoloration to the rear panel, but really that is all. However, there are no seamsplits, owners' markings, bends, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and highly attractive in appearance – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. While there are a few slightly noisy passages, in general the playback is quite fine. However, those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
